PSALM XXXVII.

MORNING HYMN.

'Not finding thine own pleasure, nor doing thine own ways."

EVERY thought should be directed

Heavenward through his hallow'd day; Worldly themes should be rejected,

Themes that draw the soul

'Tis the day of sacred rest;

away:

'Tis the day the Lord has bless'd.

Oh what glorious themes invite us,
When we look on mercy's plan !
These are themes may well delight us,
Themes of joy to guilty man ;
Full of sweetness, full of grace,
Suited to the sinner's case.

Why should we grow weary, thinking

Of the Saviour's grace and love?
From these springs his people drinking,

Get a taste of joys above:

Oh! 'tis good the Lord to know, 'Tis our heaven begun below.

PSALM XXXIX., XL.

EVENING HYMN.

"Sabbaths-a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God."

ERE another Sabbath's close,
Ere again we seek repose,
Lord, our song ascends to thee,
At thy feet we bow the knee.

For the mercies of the day,
For this rest upon our way,
Thanks to thee alone be given,
Lord of earth, and King of heaven.

Cold our services have been,
Mingled every prayer with sin,
But thou canst and wilt forgive;
By thy grace alone we live.

Whilst this thorny path we tread,
May thy love our footsteps lead;
When our journey here is past,
May we rest with thee at last.

Let these earthly Sabbaths prove
Foretastes of our joys above;
While their steps thy pilgrims bend
To the rest which knows no end.

EVER blessed God, we approach thy footstool, and worship thee in spirit and in truth. Let thy Holy Spirit teach us how to pray, and what to pray for. May he guide our thoughts, regulate our feelings, and help us to ask in faith, nothing doubting. We would be thankful for a Mediator between thyself and us. Truly thou hast done great things for the children of men, in giving thine only begotten Son to be the light of the world and the Saviour of all who believe and obey him. We thank thee, O thou Preserver of men, that thou hast kept us in peace and safety during the night, and hast brought us to the commencement of another of the days of the Son of man. Blessed be thy name for a day of rest, for the institution of public worship, and for all the means of grace. Let this be a day to be remembered, a time of refreshing from the presence of the Lord. Help us to confess our sins and to forsake them. repentance which is unto salvation, and good hope through grace. Be with us, heavenly Father, when we shall assemble in the name of our adorable Lord. Then let the light of thy countenance be upon us, and let thy Holy Spirit sanctify the services of the day to the profit of all who shall wait upon thee. May thy servant, our pastor, be assisted by thy Holy Spirit. May he be enabled to speak a word in season, and to commend himself to every man's conscience in the sight of God. May thy word from his mouth be as a hammer that breaketh a rock, and as a balm which

heals and strengthens the wounded. May sinners be converted to the Lord; may inquirers be instructed in the way of life, and may those who have believed unto righteousness be established in their most holy faith, and perfected in every Christian grace. Be also with all the ministers of the everlasting gospel, in whatever place they labour. Keep them from error and unrighteousness, lest they cause their hearers to go astray. Teach them, that they may teach others the truth as it is in Jesus. Give prosperity to the churches of the Lord Jesus. May they be purified, established in sound doctrine, and increased with such as shall be saved. Let thy blessing rest on the efforts of thy servants to spread the gospel through the world. Hasten the time, O Lord, when every idol shall perish, and when thine ancient people the Jews, with the fulness of the Gentiles, shall be brought into the fold of Christ. We also commend to thy guidance and blessing all those who teach the young. May they be intelligent, prudent, and persevering, and may their labours of love be abundantly rewarded. Incline the hearts of the young to seek thee early, and as they advance in life may they grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus. Bestow the blessings of salvation on all classes in society, and make all things, whether pleasing or painful, conducive to the spiritual profit of our fellow men. Bless with thy favour every member of this family, and all for whom we should intercede. Answer our petitions, and accept our thanksgivings, for the sake of our Lord and Saviour; to whom, with thyself and Spirit, we desire to ascribe everlasting praises. Amen.

AT the close of this sacred day, O Lord, we would enter into thy presence with gratitude, and thankfully present our domestic worship. Let our evening sacrifice be acceptable through Jesus Christ our Lord, in whose name we pray and praise. Cleanse our thoughts, and the services in which we have been occupied to-day, in his all-purifying blood. Accept us, accept our worship, through his mediation, and let his intercession obtain for us all spiritual blessings.

We wish to be more holy. Spirit of holiness, take up thine abode in us, and renew and sanctify our hearts. Make the means of instruction which we have enjoyed to-day, instrumental in accomplishing the will of God in us, even our sanctification. Strengthen our faith, and hope, and love. Let thine own power mould us according to the will of God, working in us the good pleasure of thy goodness, and the work of faith with power. Our Sabbaths are fast passing away. Forbid, O God, that any of them should be unimproved; and when our last on earth shall close, may we be anticipating that blessed Sabbath which, with its holy, happy engagements, remains for thy saints in the better world.

Merciful God, render thy word effectual in the conversion of sinners, wheresoever it has been proclaimed to-day. Let no faithful servant of thine have to lament that the report has not been believed, nor the arm of the Lord been made bare. Crown with thy
