PREFACE AND APOLOGY.

During a great portion of the winter and spring, I was afflicted after the manner of Job, (according to popular notions,) and rendered thereby unable to use a pen for nearly three months. On recovery, numerous deferred matters so overtasked my time, that at one period İ believed I would have to give up the preparation of the Register. But remonstrances and inclination led me to persevere; and by employing the pen of another, and his aid in collecting the statistics furnished, I have been enabled to furnish the Publisher with the copy at a late date. As the person employed was inexperienced in making out the statistics, I can hardly hope they are even as free from error as in former years. And for the want of time, I was obliged to omit the anecdotes, and use several selections-all of which I regretted, but could not avoid. Such as it is, it must be or not at all; and believing that it was better, and would be more acceptable than NOTHING, I gave it. I trust I may do better another year.

Fort Plain, N. Y., July 20th, 1852.
