2nd. To assist Members with information and advice in the purchase and sale of practices. 3rd. To raise a Benevolent Fund by devoting to that object the profits arising from the general operations of the Society.

Staf MEDICAL BENEVOLENT FUND, 11, NEW BURLINGTON STREET. W.-Established 1836.-Pres., Sir J. Clark, Bart., M.D.; Vice-Pres., Sir H. Holland, Bart., M.D., G. Burrows, M.D., H. Bence Jones, M.D., and Mr. J. Bacot; Trust., Sir C. Hastings, M.D., G. Burrows, M.D., and Mr. J. Toynbee; Committee, Messrs. C. A. Aikin, E. H. Ambler, E. Barker, H Bullock, J. Churchill, J. Clark, M.D. G. T. Dale, J. T. France, T. H. Hills, J. Hodgson, G. C. Jonson, J. Lavies, C. F. J. Lord, W. Martin, H. K. Owen, M.D., E. H. Sieveking, M.D., H. Sterry, and J. Ward; Treas., Mr. J. Toynbee, 18, Savile-row, W.; Hon. Sec., W. H. Broadbent, M.D., 23, Upper Seymourst. Portman-sq. W.; Coll., Mr. W. Self, Nugent Villa, 216, Richmond-rd. Hackney, N.E. This Fund was instituted in the year 1836 to afford immediate pecuniary relief to distressed qualified members of the profession, their widows or orphans; and to grant annuities to the aged and worn-out among them. The extent to which these objects have been attained may be estimated by the fact that the Fund has now 30 annuitants; and that during the past year £865 was expended in grants to 88 cases of urgent distress, in the majority of which no other resource was open. addition to the relief afforded to the aged, blind, sick, and helpless, this Fund has aided in the bringing up and placing in situations of orphans, has given timely help to struggling widows and daughters, by which they have tided over temporary difficulties which would otherwise have overwhelmed them; and has, in many instances, enabled medical men, reduced to poverty by misfortune or illness, to resume practice and support their families.

In

The Committee earnestly appeal to the Profession at large for renewed aid, by which the benefits of the Fund may be extended, and direct attention to the principles on which the Fund is managed. The applicants for relief or annuities have not the trouble and expense of a canvass, or the pain attending publicity. Relief is given as promptly as possible. The only expenses are for printing, postage, and stationery, and the Collector's percentage. The Committee meet at three p.m. on the last Tuesday of every month, to receive applications; and when the evidence as to character and the reality of the distress is satisfactory, a sum proportionate to the urgency of the case and the means at the disposal of the Committee, is voted, and at once sent by the Treasurer.

Subscriptions will be received by the Treasurer, Hon. Secretary, or Collector, or by any of the Members of Committee or Honorary Local Secretaries.

street.

This Society was formed in the year 1788, by Drs. T. Denman, R. Denison, A. Douglas, J. Sims, and J. Squire, and Messrs. W. Chamberlaine and T. Rendall, with the object of establishing a brotherhood for relieving, half yearly, those Widows and Orphans of its deceased Members who might need assistance.

It unites the advantages of a Provident with those of a Benevolent Society. It is Provident, as by the small yearly subscription of Two Guineas the Members do, through it, protect their own families from destitution, should they unexpectedly need it; and it is Benevolent, as its benefits are conferred only on those who are left in indigent circumstances.

The Society has been greatly assisted by legacies and contributions from Members and others. and has especially to acknowledge the gracious patronage of various members of the Royal Family.

The permanent efficiency of the Society depends on the maintenance of a due proportion between the available income and the claims made on the funds. Computations have been made by experienced actuaries on all the points susceptible of calculation by way of average.

The experience of seventy-six years has fully proved the need that existed for this Society, for the last Report shows that 123 widows, and 188 children of Members of the Society, (comprised in 136 families relieved,) have been placed in comfort by an aggregate sum of above 55,000%, paid in half-yearly sums. Many of these recipients were in a state of absolute poverty, when the Society stepped in to succour them.

In the year 1863, 21667. 108. was distributed among forty-eight widows and twenty-two orphans. Great care has been taken, in the management of its resources, to secure the means of affording permanently such relief as the Society provides for those whose unfortunate condition renders assistance needful; and the good which it has accomplished has proved the wisdom and benevolence of those who originally planned the Society, and the prudence and efficiency with which its affairs have since been conducted.

The Society's affairs are managed by a President, twelve Vice-Presidents, three Treasurers, and twenty-four Directors, who are elected by the Members in April, and whose services are gratuitous.

All legally qualified Members of the Profession, residing within the County of Middlesex, or WITHIN THE LONDON DISTRICT POST, are eligible for proposal; the mode of admission is by ballot.

Proposal Papers, and other communications for the Court of Directors, should be sent to the Secretary before the first Wednesday in the months of January, April, July, and September. Laws, Lists, and Forms of Proposal may be obtained from the Secretary, and will be sent by Post on receipt of a Stamp.

The Secretary attends at the Office, 53, Berners-street, every Wednesday and Friday, from four to five p.m.
