O! how will ages yet unborn, when told

Of MANSFIELD's judgment, eloquence, and taste, Mourn the fad lofs, and in abhorrence hold

The Gothic rage, that laid fuch treasures wafte!

But, O ye Powers, who make mankind your care,
: Restore the labours of fo rare a mind!.....
Let added life the mighty lofs repair,

Or MURRAY's lofs is that of all mankind.

Then after-times, enraptur'd high, shall tafte
The honey'd dews his balmy lips emit,
And freely hail him, when all faction's past,
The fource of science, eloquence, and wit:

From which shall iffue ftreams of claffic lore
Beyond e'en ATTIC or ITALIAN fame:
Whofe lymph, fublim'd by his exalting power,
Shall raise, when quaff'd, the future poet's flame:*

* That is; Be of equal efficacy with the diftinguished waters of Caftalia, and other celebrated fountains of antiquity, which are faid to inspire all who drank them, and in proportion to what was drank

ON

ON THE

RIGHT HON. LORD THURLOW,

Lord High Chancellor of Great-Britain, 1780.

PINDARUM QUISQUIS STUDET MULARI,

JULE, CERATIS, &C.

HOR. Lib. iv. Ode 2.

WHOE'ER, by vifionary hopes misled,

Presumes to reach great THURLOW's daring flight,

Like ICARUS muft fal!, too weak his head

To bear the fplendors of th' empyreal height.

THURLOW-whofe eloquence, refiftlefs, pours
Like fóme fierce flood that hath its banks o'erflown,

And, fwoln by heavy rains, impetuous roars

In dreadful sheets the craggy mountain down!

[blocks in formation]

Means he the titled culprit‡ to arraign,
Or warmly plead in injur'd virtue's cause?
'Tis his to deluge or with joy or pain,
Convince, aftonish, and arrest applause:

Wrapt in attention, how with eager ear
His pointed pleas the crouded courts devour!
In extacy admiring fenates hear

From claffic lips the golden periods pour!

Profound his reasoning! elegant his phrase!

What fire, what spirit, mark the bold discourse! In whom collected to a focus blaze

The Roman's brilliance, and Athenian's|| force.

Shall then fuch talents, to perfection rear'd,
Alike the pride and envy of mankind,
Oh fell disease !* by thy rude hand impair'd,
(Mock'd our high hopes) an early period find?.

Does gracious Heaven regard man's frail eftate;-
Hear gracious Heaven a suppliant nation's prayer:
Protract awhile our great Palladium's fate,

And thus a fuppliant nation's forrow spare!

In the Kingston caufe human abilities never perhaps appeared to fach advantage.

§ Tully. Demofthenes. * Alluding to his illness..

E'en

E'en as we wish, prevails our fond request,

And Heaven consents to ease our anxious fears: Aufpicious figns of THURLOW's health suggest Scenes charg'd with blifs to mark fucceeding years.

With cherub fmiles HYGEIA, pow'r benign,

From foftering wings her cordial influence sheds; Bids the pale cheek in health's complexion shine, And through the languid frame new vigour spreads.

O BRITONS, then with warmest praise repay
Heaven's love of man in THURLOW's life display'd!
Loft in the blaze of whofe tranfcendant ray,
Each leffer fire's diminish'd light shall fade!

[blocks in formation]

If fuch there be-increase their number Heav'n,

And

may

their bows to RIMNON be forgiven!

Not one of these is BEECHER-selfish, proud,
Malicious, thoughtless, ignorant, and loud:
A rumbling paper-mill, that noife affords,
Forc'd from the rags of street-collected words;
Statutes he quotes unheard, pleads rules unknown,
Talks much, means nothing, but ftill blunders on,
And has no friend to bid the fool have done.

Near him, and like him, prompt for a defence,
Advanc'd in years, but still a babe in sense,
Sits prating DICK;* fop, fox-hunter, and fool,
A flave to prejudice, and RowLAND's tool;
Who not once weighing what is right and just,
Says, votes, unsays, retracts, because he must.

Maiden in form, effeminate of phrase,
Young ORLEBARt would fmile us into praise:
In words luxuriant who debates a caufe,
Speaks his opinion, and when right, withdraws:
With what diftinction can fuch conduct square?
'Tis want of justice or excess of fear.

William Beecher, Efq; late of Reynold, in the County of Bedford.

* Late Richard Orlebar, Efq; of Hinwick Hall, in the County of Bedford.

†This Gentleman, who fucceeded the above, had a moft amiable character, and was much beloved by all who knew him.
