THE works enumerated in this Catalogue have been collected during a series of years, and are of a miscellaneous description. They have recently been examined by a gentleman of literary character, a layman of cultivated philosophical judgment, who has passed many days in perusing their contents, and in arranging them in their present order. And it is believed that the publication may be of use to some Scholars who take an interest in the private libraries of gentlemen residing in the country. There are doubtless many such private collections, containing rare books, valuable editions, or interesting family manuscripts, which, it is to be hoped, will be made known to the public by their worthy and courteous possessors, in a manner in some degree similar to that which has been adopted on this occasion.
