· (anon.) suite du quatrième livre de l'Odyssée d'Homère, ou les aventures de Télémaque, fils d'Ulysse. Paris, veuve de Cl. Barbin, 1699. 12. 208 pages, with a royal privilege.

Notwithstanding the royal privilege, the printing of this 1st edition was prohibited, when the first 208 pages had been printed, the last of which ends, il (Idomeneus) marche chancelant vers la ville en demandant son fils; consequently in the 5th book of these editions, which are divided into 24 books. Nevertheless, the book was immediately reprinted under the same date, with some corrections; and this reprint differs from the original edition in this respect, that the running title has throughout Odycée instead of Odyssée, whereas the 1st edition has this mistake only as far as p. I 20. Another reprint is entitled, Avantures etc. suivant la copie de Paris. Haye, Adr. Moetjens, 1699. 12°. 208 pages. The continuation at first appeared in an edition of the above fragment, without place or date, 12°. of 80 pages in small type: it has separate pagination, which goes as far as 350. This continuation also appeared by itself, without place or date, 12°.; namely, tom. II. of 230 pages, tom. III. of 204, tom. IV. of 215, and tom. V. of 208, in which the fragment that appeared by Moetjens is completed. Shortly after a crowd of good and bad editions of the entire work appeared, of which only the neat one, Haye, Adr. Moetjens, without date, 12°. of 448 pages, is deserving of being noticed. Moetjens announced it as an edition made after the revision of the author who was mentioned in the title, and it contains a preface of the abbé de la Landelle de Saint-Remy, directed against Bossuet, and printed in several other editions.

Concerning the controversy occasioned by Telemachus, see Artigny Mémoires, II. 240 etc. Vallière Catal. VI. 102. Concerning the translations, see Leipz. Litt. Zeit. 1812. vol. III. p. 1766. The honest censor of the press thought the book was faithfully translated from the Greek, Chardon Mélanges, III. 269.

7417 les avantures de Télémaque par de la Mothe Fénélon (avec un discours sur la poésie épique par de Ramsay). Par., Etienne ou Delaulne, 1717. 12°. 2 vols. with plates.

The finest and best of all the old editions

of Telemachus printed at Paris. It was superintended by the marquis de Fénelon, from a greatly corrected and enlarged original MS. It forms the groundwork of the subsequent editions, and although not altogether free from faults, it is far more correct than the edition which appeared by the same publisher in the same year, in small type, vol. 12°.

At that time forbidden in France, on account of the cutting allusions to the court of Lewis XIV. contained in the notes, and consequently for a long time sought after; otherwise very indifferent as to the plates and printing, and very incorrect. edition of 1719 has better impressions of the plates, and that of 1720 is somewhat more correct, belongs to the original editions, and is scarce. At the end there ought to be a mythological and geographical lexicon of 44 pages, which is often wanting. 7419 les mêmes, avec des notes. Par. 1730. 4°. with plates. Also on large paper.

Fine; formerly prized as a splendid edition, and only 150 copies struck off. superintended by the marquis de Fénelon, at that time ambassador at the Hague. Some deficiencies of the edition of 1717 are made good, and many errors corrected. The book usually ends with p. 395, but some copies have also the following pieces: 1. Examen de conscience pour un roi, 40 pages. 2. Récit de la vie de Fénélon, 43 pages. 3. Chapitre de la généalogie de Fénélon, 8 pages. 4. La liste des ouvrages de Fénélon, 10 pages. 5. Mémoire concernant Mad. Guyon, 3 pages in 2 columns. These 5 additions, the 4 last of which are by the marquis de Fénelon, ought to be annexed; but as the French court forbad their publication, they are consequently only appended to some copies.
