But a work of this kind may not be rendered useless because others of a similar character have preceded it. Every writer has a manner of his own; and the exercises of the awakened are almost endlessly diversified. The subject as presented by one author may meet some cases, but not others. May I not hope then, that, notwithstanding the many who have preceded me in this path, this little volume may prove glad tidings to some inquiring soul? It may meet the case of some who have read other works of this kind without finding peace; and it may possibly fall into the hands of others who have never had the privilege of reading a treatise in answer to the great question, "What must I do to be saved?" It is for such, and especially for the young, and for those in our wide-spread country (America), who enjoy not the regular ministrations of the sanctuary, that I have written.
