It was got up without limit to expense, by a well known traveller of taste, and is thought by engravers to be the finest work of scenery ever produced in this country. Owing to the demise of the author, it has been for some time locked up from the public, and had become so scarce a book as scarcely to be known in the trade. It completes the sceneries of Capt. Batty, Cockburn, and Mr. Brockedon, and is the only pretty set of Views in Greece published in this country. "Well entitled is Mr. Williams to call these views select; for they are so in every fine and high sense of the word. Is 1757 One of the most splendid works ever published, and its accuracy is equal to its beauty. Succeeding travellers are all indebted more or less to Wood's delineations and descriptions; Burckhardt, in particular, in his Travels in Syria, says that Wood's work renders any other description of Balbec unnecessary. "Of all the works that distinguish this age, noue perhaps excel those beautiful editions of Balbec and Palmyra-not published at the command of a Louis Quatorze, or at the expense of a cardinal nephew, but undertaken by private curiosity and good sense, and trusted to the taste of a polished nation. And when I endeavour to do justice to the editions of Palmyra and Balbec, I would not confine my encomium to the aculptures. The modest descriptions prefixed are stan dards of writing; the exact measure of what should and what should not be said, and of what was necessary to be known, was never comprehended in more clear diction, or more elegant style. The pomp of the buildings has not a nobler air than the simplicity of the narration."-Horace Walpole. On Wood's monument at Richmond are these words. "The beautiful editions of Balbec and Palmyra, illostrated by the classic pen of Robert Wood, supply a nobler and more lasting monument, and will survive those august remains." "Of all the antiquities that have been communicated to the world; of all the remains of ancient monuments brought from the East, none can be compared with the ruins of Palmyra and of Balbec; not only on account of their stupendous magnificence, but for the extraordinary diligence of those gentlemen who have favoured the public with this view of them, and the accuracy and elegance of the designs. We are authorized in saying thus much, by the unanimous consent of all the Literati in Europe."-Nichols's Literary Anecdotes.
