This work comprehends the substance of all that bas been witten on the subject, including several entire works (Cornaro, Friar Bacon, &c.), with a Catalogue of all the writers on Health and Longevity.

"This new and compact edition contains the whole of the previous four volumes, with such improvements as the advanced state of knowledge supplies. Drs. Baillie, Beddoes, Currie, Sprengel, and other eminent Physicians have warmly eulogised the work; but the best testimony of its usefulness is the author's own longevity, as he was enabled to carry on his literary pursuits at the advanced age of eighty." Where plates were not deemed satisfactory, it has been enriched by original drawings, from specimens furnished by the beautiful Anatomical Museum of the University." the Fifth, or Supplementary volume, entirely by Sir W. J. Hooker, to complete the old editions, 4to. 36 coloured plates, (pub. at £2. 12s 6d) bds. £1. 11s

No well-stored English Library should be without Woodville's Medical Botany, a work of long-established reputation, and the best on a subject which must, more or less, be interesting to every man of inquiry. It contains accurate figures and descriptions of all the plants used in English medicine, and is of such authority with professional men, as to be almost as essential to them as the Pharmacopoeia itself. Subsequent publications of a similar kind, though with Woodville as their text-book, have fallen greatly short of the original, as well in comprehensiveness of plan, as in accuracy of delineation and correctness of colouring.

COMPREHENDING

Lexicons, Grammars, Prosody, Syntax, etc. and all Works in Dialects, or promotive of Etymology.

"By as many Languages as a man can speak (said Charles V.) so many times more is he a man.”

In some instances, books which are not directly grammatical, are inserted under the head of the particular Language or Dialect; especially those which are now chiefly studied with a view to Etymology.

It is unquestionably the earliest composition of the heroic kind extant in any language of modern, or rather of barbarous Europe.
