LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC NOTICES.

A Practical Treatise on Topographical Surveying and Drawing, has just been published by Lieutenant Siborn, containing much valuable practical knowledge relative to Military Surveys and Drawings of Maps, and also in Modelling Hilly Countries, Fortifications, &c., with illustrative plates; the whole of which is got up in a superior style, and will, no doubt, be considered as an acquisition to the military student, if not to the practical land surveyor.

TOPOGRAPHICAL MAPS.-Mr. Starling has just published a Topographical Map of Islington, near London, from actual survey, the engraving of which is executed in a style of excellence, that reflects great credit upon the artist. We hear that it is the intention of Mr. S. to follow this first production by maps of other villages in the immediate vicinity of London, which we have no doubt will meet with very great encouragement.

PRUSSIAN ATLAS.-M. Vander Melen, of Brussels, is engaged in preparing for publication, a Universal Atlas on a large scale, of the physical, political, statistical, and mineralogical geography of the known world. The work will appear in parts.

VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD--Another scientific voyage to the Southern Hemisphere and Round the World, is about to be commenced by Captain Henry Foster, in the Chanticleer, a vessel of ten guns.

Mr. Joseph Woods has in the press, Letters of an Architect, from France, Italy, and Greece, containing observations on ancient and modern architecture, which are intended to convey an idea of the effect of each building, and to explain the principles on which that effect is produced.

In the press, an Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism.

EUROPEAN SCENERY.-This work is as pleasing a specimen of Lithography as any that has hitherto been published,

its fourth and fifth parts are now out; the former contains well drawn views of Calais, Rouen, Dieppe, and Havre, by Gauci; the latter is devoted to English subjects, presenting faithful representations of Oxford, Winchester, Darlington, and Cowes, in the Isle of Wight, by W. Westall, A.R.A., the execution of which must be considered as almost at the summit of excellence in the lithographic art.

ISLE OF CUBA. At Havannah a periodical work of considerable interest is regularly published, under the title of the Annals of Science, Agriculture, Commerce, and the Arts. Its contents are devoted to the History, Geography, Mineralogy, Botany, and Statistics, &c. of the island of Cuba.

Nearly ready for publication, a Narrative of a Second Expedition to Explore the Shores of the Polar Ice, under the command of Captain Franklin; including the progress of the main part of the expedition westwardly, from the mouth of the Mackenzie River towards Icy Cape, by Captain Franklin, accompanied by Captain Back, and a detachment easterly to the mouth of the Copper Mine River, and from thence overland to winter quarters. The work will appear in quarto, with a chart and illustrations.

Part XI, of the Select Views in Greece, by W. H. Williams, Esq. Edinburgh, has been delivered to the subscribers since our last. The Views it contains, are the Temple of Minerva restored, by C. R. Cockerell, Esq.; a General View of the Corinthian Shore, as seen from a height near Voetizza; the Promontory of Sunium from the sea; Crissa on Mount Parnassus, looking up the Vale of Solona, the ancient Amphissa; and lastly, Cardamoula, the ancient Cardamyle, Gulf of Coron. The whole of which are engraved in the line manner in the best style of the art, and deserves the same commendation as the former parts of this interesting publication.
