PREFACE.

Object of the Exercise Book. - Rules alone, i.e., theory without practice, are of little, if any, use to the learner; like a tree without roots, they will never bear any fruit; it is only when studied in their practical bearing, when applied rightly and without any hesitation, that they become really useful to the student. To secure this end a book of Exercises was necessary.

Yet, how such a book should be composed, and what kind of sentences should be chosen, are questions on which there exists among teachers much difference of opinion. Whilst some think that, from the very beginning, the student should be presented with sentences each of which should contain a moral truth, an historical fact, or a weighty maxim; others hold that such kind. of sentences would prove rather a stumbling-block for beginners than a benefit.
