PREFACE.

THE aim of this work is to supply the Amateur with all the information necessary for his guidance in forming such a Collection of the Letters of distinguished Personages as would well repay the labour and money expended on it. After a careful revision it is believed that no matter of importance connected with the study of Autographs and Historical Documents has been omitted, whilst the fullest instruction concerning these from the earliest to the present time is supplied--including interesting details relative to Writing Materials, Forgers and Forgery, Calligraphy, the Discrimination and Comparison of Handwriting, the Destruction and Restoration of Manuscripts, Celebrated Collectors, and suggestions as to the various sources from which Autographs may be obtained-their different values, modes of arrangement, etc.

The extensive series of well executed facsimiles of the handwriting of the most celebrated personages whose autographs are in greatest esteem; together with the alphabets and specimens of the various styles of writing which have been used in our country, supply sufficient instruction for the comparison of signatures, the reading of old documents, etc. The addition of a complete Price List, which for the first time has been compiled from all available catalogues, etc., expressly for this work, will be of the greatest service to every one interested in the sale or purchase of manuscripts. Aided by this manual, the collector, though a novice, will soon be able to follow successfully the pursuit of these literary treasures and form a valuable cabinet without being deceived by forgeries or victimised by excessive prices.

Swettenham Rectory, Congleton.

HENRY T. SCOTT.
