BY T. B. JOHNSON,

AUTHOR OF THE SHOOTER'S COMPANION, &c. &c.

N announcing the present work to the SPORTING WORLD, the Publishers do not deem any logy necessary, as there is no Book on sale professedly of a similar character, nor one that 1 furnish a Sportsman with that information which he may desire on the various Field Sports he present day. The great difficulty of obtaining PRACTICAL and SCIENTIFIC INSTRUCTIONS arding Sporting Subjects is, because practical Sportsmen very rarely feel disposed for literary pur; while professed literary men seldom, if ever, pursue the Sports of the Field; and, in sequence, when called upon, as the means of subsistence, to write upon such subjects, their sumed theoretical knowledge has enabled them merely to manifest their incapacity for the formance of the task they had undertaken-their profound ignorance of a science upon which y professed to impart instruction, and to render more interesting by copious detail and correct idation.

Under such circumstances, the Publishers conceived that a Sportsman's Dictionary" wou be not only acceptable to those who follow the Hounds, pursue the Feathered Tribes, frequent t Lake, or the Stream, or attend the Course, but also the Public in general, since the Chase is high interesting to the human mind, and has, in all ages, formed a prominent feature in the Nation Character of the inhabitants of these islands.

They, therefore, honestly and fearlessly assert that the Author and Compiler of it is a we known Sportsman, who has made the various subjects which the book contains the business his life, and whose practical knowledge of FIELD AMUSEMENTS, in its various ramifications, uniformly acknowledged. Nor have they spared either pains or expense in the Printing or t Embellishments which illustrate and adorn the Work; their object being to produce, not mere a Book of General Reference, but a complete SPORTSMAN'S LIBRARY; which they trust will found worthy of that Patronage which they earnestly and respectfully solicit.

This Work is elegantly Printed on Fine Paper, and Illustrated with numerous HIGH FINISHED and EMBLEMATICAL ENGRAVINGS, executed in the most Characteristic Style Excellence by those eminent Artists,

T would be difficult to imagine any selection from the great storehouse of Nature more likely nerit general attention, or to excite general interest, than the one to which we now invite blic Notice. Of all the animals in Creation, (with the exception of those which minister to carnivorous appetites,) it would be impossible to name two which are so intimately associated h our wants, our pleasures, and our attachments, as the HORSE and the DOG. To the former are indebted for the power of transporting ourselves from place to place, with speed and fort, and for the means of participating in the manly and heathful Sports of the Field; while labours of Agriculture, and the pursuits of Commerce, are no less indebted to it for increased vity and productiveness.

But it is not on this ground alone that it aspires to patronage. It takes a wider range, and by including in its design, the history, the qualities, and the different breeds of the DOG-tha half-reasoning friend and companion of man-it enlarges its claims to general reception. Who i there that has not, at some period of his life, acknowledged the influence of an attachmen between himself and his dog? Who is there that does not recognize in this faithful, vigilan sagacious, humble, and silent friend, the possessor of qualities which are not always to be foun in the human and more talkative friend?

It is only necessary further to observe that the literary execution and graphic embellishmen of this work are not unworthy of the subjects delineated. With respect to the latter, th Proprietors confidently anticipate that the names of the Artists employed are a sufficie guarantee; while the former is the production of an experienced Sportsman.

The following are the Subjects of the Plates which embellish the "Sportsman's Repository:”—
