VERY SCARCE. This periodical contains contributions by Apperley, "Wildrake" and other well-known writers of the Hunt and Turf, and includes among the splendid illustrations, engravings from Alken, Davis, Hofland, Leech, and others.

333. SPORTING SCRAP BOOK of nearly 300 pages, containing Broadsides; Newspaper accounts of Races; Excerpts, etc., from 1798 to 1819. Folio, old green vellum.

A MOST INTERESTING AND VALUABLE COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY SPORTING MATERIAL, WHICH WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT, IF NOT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE, TO DUPLICATE.

It contains Broadsides and accounts of the IMPORTANT RACES OF THE TIME, including Catterick-Bridge Races, 1798-1804, with a List of the Subscribers to these Races for 1798 and 1800; Doncaster Races, 1798 and 1800; Bibury Meeting, 1800 to 1803; Richmond Races, 1803; York Oatlands, 1804; Sale Catalogues of Racers; Broadside announcements of Stallions' services, etc., together with cuttings of accounts of the various Races during the period covered; Trials, and other interesting news items; Broadside Sporting Songs, and other interesting material. Formerly in the libraries of Sir Jonathan E. Backhouse and Leonard L. Hartley, with their bookplates.

These clippings were collected by an ardent North Country Sportsman a century ago, one Capt. Hartley, whose name figures in many of the lists as an active participant in the various sports. He was a resident of Middleton Tyas in Yorkshire, and the race meetings of that County are abundantly represented.

It is highly probable that a large number of the records here preserved are not to be found elsewhere.
