An Act for the further Prevention of the counterfeiting of Silver Tokens iffued by the Governor and Company of the Bank of England, called Dollars, and of Silver Pieces iffued and circulated by the faid Governor and Company, called Tokens; and for the further Prevention of Frauds practifed by the Imitation of the Notes or Bills of the faid Governor and Company. [20th July 1812.]

WHEREAS the Governor and Company of the Bank of

England have for the Convenience of the Public caused to be coined or ftamped and circulated a large Quantity of Silver Dollars, containing on the Obverfe Side thereof an Impreffion of His Majesty's Head, and the following Words and Letters, videlicet "Georgius III. Dei Gratia Rex," and on the Reverse Side thereof the Impreffion of Britannia, and the following Words and Figures, videlicet " Five Shillings Dollar Bank of England 1804:" And whereas the faid Governor and Company, with the Approbation of His Majefty's Moft Honourable Privy Council, have alfo iffued and circulated, for the Convenience of the Public, a Quantity of Silver Pieces, denominated Tokens, for the respective Sums of Three Shillings, and One Shilling and Six pence, fuch Tokens for the Sum of Three Shillings containing on the Obverfe Side thereof an Impreffion of His Majefty's Head, and the following Words and Letters, videlicet " Georgius III. Dei Gratia Rex,' and on the Reverse Side thereof the following Words and Figures, videlicet "Bank Token, 3 Shill." with the Addition of the Year in which the fame were refpectively made and ftamped; and fuch Tokens for the Sum of One Shilling and Six pence, containing the fame Impreffion, Words and Letters on the Obverfe Side thereof, as upon the faid Token for Three Shillings, and on the Reverse Side thereof the following Words and Figures, videlicet "Bank Token, 1s. 6p." with the Addition of the Year in which the fame were refpectively coined or ftamped: And whereas the faid Governor and Company intend to iffue and circulate other like Tokens for the refpective Sums of Three Shillings and One Shilling and Six pence: And whereas the Circulation of the faid Dol52 G so. Counterfeiting

lars and Tokens has been of great public Utility, but many Inftances have occurred in which the fame have been counterfeited, whereby the Public have been greatly defrauded, and the Punishment in•flicted upon Perfons convicted of counterfeiting and uttering the fame has been found inadequate to prevent fuch Offences; For Remedy whereof, be it enacted by the King's Moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of the fame, That if any Perfon fhall, from and after the First Day of August One thoufand eight hundred and twelve, make, coin or counterfeit, or caufe or procure to be made, coined or counterfeited, or willingly act or affift in the making, coining or counterfeiting any Coin, Medal or Device whatfoever, refembling or made with Intent to refemble, or look like the faid Dollars or Tokens, or any of them, or to pafs as fuch, every Perfon fo offending, and being thereof convicted by due Courfe of Law, fhail Transportation. be deemed and adjudged to be guilty of Felony, and fhall be tranf ported for the Term of Fourteen Years.

II. And be it further enacted, That, from and after the First Day of August One thoufand eight hundred and twelve, if any Perfon fhall utter, offer or tender in Payment, or fell or give in Exchange, or pay or put off to any Perfon or Perfons, any fuch falfe or counterfeit Dollar or Dollars, Token or Tokens, as aforefaid, knowing the fame to be falfe or counterfeit, and fhall either on the fame Day of within the Space of Ten Days then next afterwards, utter, offer or tender in Payment, or fell or give in Exchange, or pay or put off any more or other fuch falfe or counterfeit Dollar or Dollars, Token or Tokens, as aforefaid, knowing the fame to be falfe or counterfeit, to the fame Perfon or Perfons, or to any other Perfon or Perfons, or fhall at the time of fuch firft uttering, offering, tendering in Payment, felling or giving in Exchange, paying or putting off, have in his or her Cuftody or Poffeffion, one or more fuch counterfeit Dollar or Dollars, Token or Tokens, as aforefaid, or any Piece or Pieces of counterfeit Money whatsoever, befides what was or were fo uttered, offered, tendered in Payment, fold, given in Exchange, paid or put off, then fuch Perfon fo uttering, offering, tendering in Payment, felling or giving in Exchange, paying or putting off the fame, fhall be deemed and taken to be a Common Utterer of fuch counterfeit Dollars or Tokens, and being thereof convicted fhall fuffer One Year's Imprifonment, and fhall find Sureties for his or her good Be haviour for Two Years more, to be computed from the End of the faid Year; and if any Perfon having been Once fo convicted as a Common Utterer of fuch counterfeit Dollars or Tokens fhall afterwards again utter, offer or tender in Payment, fell or give in Exchange, pay or put off, any fuch falfe or counterfeit Dollar or Dol lars, Token or Tokens, as aforefaid, to any Perfon or Perfons, knowing the fame to be falfe or counterfeit, then fuch Perfon, being thereSecond Offence. of convicted, fhall, for fuch Second Offence, be deemed and adjudged to be guilty of Felony, and fhall be tranfported for the Term of

And whereas divers Frauds have been practifed by making and publishing Papers with certain Words and Characters fo nearly refembling the Notes and Bills of the Governor and Company of the Bank of England, as to appear to ignorant and unwary Perfons to be the Notes or Bills of the faid Governor and Company ;' For the Prevention whereof, be it enacted, That if any Perfon, from and after the First Day of Auguft One thoufand eight hundred and twelve, fhall engrave, cut, etch, fcrape, or by any other Means or Device make, or fhall caufe or procure to be engraved, cut, etched, which shall refcraped, or by any other Means or Device made, or fhall knowingly fembie Bank aid or affift in the engraving, cutting, etching, fcraping, or by any Notes, or utter other Means or Device making, in or upon any Plate of Copper, any Paper reBrafs, Steel, Pewter, or of any other Metal or Mixture of Metals, fembling Notes, or upon Wood or any other Materials, or upon any Plate whatfoever, any Word or Words, Figure or Figures, Character or Characters, the Impreffion taken from which fhall resemble or be apparently intended to refemble the Whole or any Part of any of the Notes or Bills of the faid Governor and Company commonly called Bank Notes and Bank Poft Bills, or fhall contain any Word, Number, Figure or Character in White on a black, fable or dark Ground, without an Authority in Writing for that Purpose from the faid Governor and Company, to be produced and proved by the Party accufed, or fhall (without fuch Authority as aforefaid) ufe any fuch Plate, Wood or other Material fo engraved, cut, etched, fcraped, or by any other Means or Device made, or fhall ufe any other Inftrument or Device for the making or printing upon any Paper or other Material, any Word or Words, Figure or Figures, Character or Characters, which fhall be apparently intended to refemble the Whole or any Part of any of the faid Notes or Bills of the faid Governor and Company, or any Word, Number, Figure or Character in White on a black, fable or dark Ground; or if any Perfon or Perfons fhall, from and after the First Day of August One thousand eight hundred and twelve, (without fuch Authority as aforefaid) knowingly have in his, her or their Cuftody, any fuch Plate, Inftrument or Device, or fhall knowingly and wilfully utter, publish or dispose of or put away any Paper or other Material con.

VI. Provided always, and be it enacted, That nothing in this Act contained fhall apply to any Paper or Writing whatfoever (other than Papers or Writings refembling fuch Notes or Bills as aforefaid) containing an Impreffion from any Plate or Plates, or other Device whatfoever, with White Letters upon black, fable or dark Ground, which fhall previous to the palling of this A& have been in the Cuftody of any Perfon or Perfons whatsoever.

An Act for granting to His Majefty certain Duties on Stone
Bottles made in or imported into Great Britain.

E Your Majefty's moit dutiful and loyal Subjects the Com mons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in Parliament affembled, thinking it expedient to grant the Duties hereinafter mentioned towards railing the neceffary Supplies to defray Your Majetty's Public Expences, and making an Addition to the Public Revenue of Great Britain, do most humbly befeech Your Majefty that it may be enacted; and be it enacted by the King' Moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Duties on Stone Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of the fame, That, from and after the First Day of September One thoufand eight hundred and twelve, there fhall be raised, levied, collected and paid unto His Majefty, his Heirs and Succeffors, the feveral Duties of Excife hereinafter mentioned, for and in refpect of Stone Bottles; that is to say,

For every Hundred Weight of Stone Bottles not exceeding Two
Quarts Measure made in Ireland, and imported from thence into
Great Britain, a countervailing Duty of Excife of Two Shillings
and Six pence:

For every Hundred Weight of Stone Bottles not exceeding Two
Quarts Meafure imported from any other Place beyond the Seas,
an Excife Duty of Two Shillings and Six pence:

And for every Hundred Weight of Stone Bottles not exceeding
Two Quarts Measure made in Great Britain, Two Shillings and
Six pence,

II. And be it further enacted, That the faid Duties, and allo the Drawbacks granted by this Act, fhall in every cafe be understood and deemed and taken to apply in the fame Proportion and after the fame Rate to any greater or lefs Quantity than a Hundred Weight

of Stone Bottles.

And be it further enacted, That within Twenty Days next Importers of after the Master or Purfer for that Voyage of the Ship or Veffel Stone Bottles to wherein any fuch Stone Bottles fhall be imported or brought into make Entry. Great Britain, fhall have or ought to have made a juft and true Entry or Report upon Oath of the Burthen, Contents and Lading of fuch Ship or Veffel, in purfuance of the Directions of an Act made in

the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Years of the Reign of King Charles 13 & 14 Car. 2. the Second, intituled An Act for preventing Frauds and regulating Abufes in His Majesty's Cufloms, the Proprietor or Proprietors, Importer or Importers, Confignee or Confignees of any fuch Stone Bottles, fhall make due Entry with the Collector of Excife in the Port or Place where fuch Stone Bottles fhall be fo imported, of all fuch Stone Bottles on board of fuch Ship or Veffel belonging to fuch Proprietor or Proprietors, Importer or Importers, Confignee or Confignees, and fhall then and before the landing of any fuch Stone Bottles fatisfy and pay the Duty by this Act impofed for or in refpect thereof, and fhall alfo within fuch Twenty Days land all fuch Stone Bottles, on Pain to forfeit for every Neglect or Refufai Penalty. to make due Entry of fuch Stone Bottles, or to pay the Duty for or in refpect thereof, or to land the fame according to the Directions of this Act, all fuch Stone Bottles on board fuch Ship or Veffel belonging to fuch Proprietor or Proprietors, Importer or Importers, Confignee or Confignees of the fame, fo neglecting or refufing, and which fhall and may be feized by any Officer or Officers of Excife.

And be it further enacted, That all and every Maker and Makers of Stone Makers of Stone Bottles, before he, fhe or they shall prefuine or make Bottles to make or manufacture any Stone Bottles, fhall make a true and particular Entryof PreEntry in Writing of every Houfe, Workhoufe, Millhoufe, Ware- mifes, &c. houfe, Shed, Shop, Room and Place by him, her or them refpectively made ufe of or intended to be made ufe of for or in the wetting, foftening, grinding, preparing, mixing or keeping of any Clay, Earth or other Material or Materials commonly ufed or employed, or fit or proper to be made ufe of or employed for or in the making or manufacturing of Stone Bottles, or for or in the making or manufacturing, hardening, drying, baking, burning or laying or keeping of any fuch Bottles at the Office of Excife, within the Compafs or Limits whereof fuch Houfe, Workhaufe, Millhoufe, Warehouse, Shed, Shop, Room or Place refpectively fhall be fituate; and all and every Maker and Makers of Stone Bottles fhall also make a true and par ticular Entry in Writing of every Cone, Kiln, Stove, Vat, Cistern, Mill, Lathe, Trundle or other Machine, Implement, Veffel or Utenfil by him, her or them kept or made ufe of, or intended to be made ufe of for or in the making, manufacturing, turning, hardening, drying, baking or burning of any fuch Bottles at the Office of Excife, within the Compafs or Limits whereof fuch Cone, Kiln, Stove, Oven, Vat, Ciftern, Mill, Lathe, Trundle or other Machine, Implement, Veffel or Utenfil refpectively fhall be fituate, kept or male ufe of refpectively; and if any Maker or Makers of Stone Bottles fhall make ufe Not making of any Houfe, Worl:houfe, Millhoufe, Warehoufe, Shed, Shop, Entry. Room or Place for or in the wetting, foftening, grinding, preparing, mixing or keeping of any Clay, Earth or other Material or Materials commonly ufed or employed or fit or proper to be made use of or employed for or in the making or manufacturing of Stone Bottles, or for or in the making, manufacturing, hardening, drying,
