denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel," I Tim. v. 8. An heavy charge, but a true one ! for infidels always walked by this rule, and ac, cording as men ftood more or less nearly related to them, by natural or political ties, made them more or less the objects of their compassion and bounty. And, thus, therefore, speaks a wife heathen; * Optime focietas hominum coujun&tioque fervabitur, fi, ut quisque erit conjunétifimus. ita in eum Benignitatis plurimum conferetur. There is a mixture of charity and justice, in this proçeeding; and the one of these serves to heighten and beautify the other.

The abundance of many of those, before whom I ftand, is, I doubt not, owing to the church; Ido not mean to the revenues of ir; (for the instances of great fortynęs raised from thence, since the reformation, are but few; and God forbid there fhould be many !) but to the pious care, that their good fathers, more nearly sensible of their oblje gations in this respect than common parents, took of their education ; and to the religious, thriving principles, which they instilled into them; and, perhaps, to the immediate blefling of God, upon their honest industry and labour, on the acccount of the very stock from which they came.
