An extremely interesting volume. The Dictionary of National Biography contains an account of James Torre, who, forsaking the Bar for antiquarian pursuits, left evidences of much valuable research behind him. Douglas's valuable work includes a complete series of the British, Roman, and
Saxon sepulchral rites and ceremonies, with the contents of several hundred burial
places, opened under the careful inspection of the author. The barrows contains urns,
swords, spear-heads, daggers, knives, battle-axes, shields and armillæ decorations of
women, consisting of gems. pensile ornaments, bracelets, beads, gold and silver buckles;
magical instruments, and other relics.
