PREFACE.

THE following pages contain all those portions of the Græcæ Grammaticæ Rudimenta in Usum Scholarum' by the same Author, which it was thought would be found most necessary and useful to those who are beginning to learn Greek; and they appear now in English rather than Latin, in deference to the wishes and representations of many who are engaged in teaching that language.

The numbering of Sections throughout is made to correspond with that of the larger Grammar. And in other respects the Author has not felt himself at liberty to depart from the substance of that work, to which the present abridgment may be regarded as introductory. Not that he is insensible to the force of arguments which may be urged by individual scholars in favor of further change; but he is still of opinion that the principles laid down in his original Preface are of great weight; and he requests that those principles may be borne in mind as determining the limits beyond which it would
