For when Doctor Ravis (then Chaplain to the Archbishop, and late Lord Bishop of London) at the earneft defire of Barrow himself, and direction of the Archbifhop, dealt with Mafter Cartwright to confer with Barrow, they being then both Prifoners in the Fleet: Master Cartwright (having been once before with him at the entreaty of Mafter Sperin a Minister) would by no means be drawn to further Conference with him again; Which his refufal, when it was Bishop Ravis's by Doctor Ravis fignified to Barrow, in the prefence of divers of good Reputation and Account, he fetched a great wood, 1592. figh, faying, And will he not? There also accom panied them Doctor Parry, now Lord Bishop of Worcester. After many paffages of Speech with Doctor White (unto whom he then feemed especially to addrefs himself) he brake forth into these words. "You are not the men " whom I most dislike in these Diffe66 rences. For although you be out of "the way, yet you think you are in the right: But I cannot but complain of "Mafter Cartwright and others of his knowledge, from whom we have re"ceived the truth of these things, and "have been taught that your Callings "are Antichriftian; who yet utterly, againft their Confciences, forfake us "in our Sufferings, and will not come "out of Babylon for fear of their lives. It being farther replied by Doctor White that thofe Callings which Barrow re. proached as Antichriftian, were the ve ry fame which Archbishop Cranmer, and Ridley, and many other holy Bishops, c. were Martyrs in Queen Mary's days, "but these holy Bands of mine (and "therewithal fhook the Fetters which "he did wear) are much more glori66 ous than any of theirs, because they "had the mark of Antichrift in their "hands. Thus he, in Newgate at that "time, in the prefence of many, with great infolency, did triumph.

75. Men therefore, not partially affected, may hereby obferve and conceive what danger Innovation bringeth to the People, and what hazard to a State; when, by little and little, it encreaseth like the fwelling or flowing of the Sea; which if it furpass the bounds wherewith it was confined, or gain never fo fmall a Breach, it spreadeth it self over a whole Country, and groweth to that violence, and stream, that it cannot by any contrary force be kept back, but without pity or mercy putteth all things to wreck where it rageth. Which, as it feemeth, Mafter Cartwright himself did now find; when after his firft Conference, he perceived how impoffible it was for him to make up the Breach

which he had unfortunately begun; for that Barrow, like a tempeftuous Surge, would have forced him (by finding his own overfight and Errors) back again from his former Pofitions, or drawa him inevitably to his Conclufions.

76. And therefore obfervable it is, Cartwright that Mafter Cartwright, having upon withdraws his first discontentment (as hath been privately. delivered) made a defperate affault and breach in Sion's peaceable and blessed City, now like a fly Captain did steal away fecretly (after Summons given) from his own Siege, fearing upon his entry by the force and prefs of his own Soldiers, to be environed and kept within the Walls (as Pyrrhus was) to the lofs of his life; or doubting belike, the outrage and violence of his Army whofe Fury he could not have appeafed when he lift, but have been enforced (as Titus was) to fee his Soldiers fack, fpoil, and burn the Holy City of Jeru falem, though he vehemently laboured, and with great earneftness cried out unto them (whom yet himself firft fet on work) to fave the Sanctuary of the Lord, but could not be heard, or at leaft, was not able to ftop their rage and fury, until it was with fire confumed and deftroyed. 77.
