DAVIS & HARVEY.

Remarks

This catalogue embraces the finest collection of material relating to Colonial Pennsylvania, which has ever been offered at public sale. The Manuscripts and Documents are those which were collected by Caleb Pusey, David Lloyd, Isaac Norris, John Kinsey Sam'l Smith, and Robert Proud, for the purpose of compiling a History of Pennsylvania. Caleb Pusey commenced it in the early part of 1700, and the material was handed down one to another, until it finally reached the hands of Robert Proud, who published the history. Of all those who owned the papers, only two were able to leave any results. Sam'l Smith, who compiled a History, embracing a period of about forty years, and Robert Proud, who compiled the complete work. In this collection will be found the original unpublished manuscript of Sam'l Smith's History, as well as the original manuscript of Proud's History, together with a series of fine letters of Wm. Penn, relating to the affairs of the province, many of which the historian has quoted in his book, as also original documents, etc., relating to the Early history of Pennsylvania used in the compilation of the work.

Aside from the manuscripts are many important early publications bearing on the same subject as well as unique files of early Philadelphia Papers, an Important Collection of early New York and Philadelphia Almanacs, Rare Bradford, Franklin, Harry, Armbruster, and New York and New England imprints, Rare Dove Caricatures on early Pennsylvania affairs, Colonial and Revolutionary Broadsides, Letters of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Gilbert Stuart, and other distinguished Personages.

To the collection is added the library of a well known collector, embracing many rare items in American history, including Filson's Kentucky, First Edition of Jefferson's Notes, First American Edition of Shakespeare, Aitken Bible, Scarce works on Masonry, a large collection of Genealogies, many State, Town and County Histories, Historical Pamphlets, &c.
