PREFACE.

THE custom of not letting the days on which great men were born and great events took place, pass by without remembrance and thanksgiving, has led to this endeavour to set forth the signal deliverances, the chief triumphs, and the most illustrious sons wherewith England especially has been blessed, and to cast upon the daily life of Englishmen the lustre of noble deeds and lofty examples.

In selecting the days to be commemorated, I have not simply consulted my own heart, but have taken into consideration the greatness, the famousness, the poetical capabilities, and the abiding moral interest of the person or the event. Once or twice only have I selected a day without regard to its famousness, and devoted a strain to some almost forgotten worthy or to some not very familiar event.
