not the keepers rescued him." Don't you think the baker deserved his punishment?

T. Yes, it served him right. We should always be kind to dumb animals.

(They go to the lion's cage.)

B. Do you know what the lion is called? T. Yes, I know. He is called "The King of Beasts.'

B. And can you tell me what that noise he is making is called?

T. No! Please teach me the names of

the noises made by all the animals here.

T. That is enough for me to remember to-day. Let us go home now and come again next Sunday to visit the picture gallery. B. Very good. Come along.

XI-IN HIBIYA PARK.

(Tanaka calls at* Mr. B's house. He knocks at the door. Mr. B's servant opens it.)

T. (raising his cap.) Good morning! Is Mr. Brown at home!

Servant. Yes, sir!

Yes, sir! Please step inside.

B. Ah, Tanaka, it's you, is it?

Please

come into my study, and have a glass of iced lemonade to cool you and quench your thirst. T. Thank you, sir. (Takes the lemonade.) B. (Now) where shall we go to-day?

trees in the shade and watch the children at

play.

B. That's a good idea! Come, drink up your lemonade and let's be off.

(In the Park.):

T. Here is a cool, shady spot, by the large fountain. Shall we sit down here? B. Yes, it will do nicely.

7. This is our newest park. How do you like it?

B. I think it very nice. When was it laid out?

T. About a year ago. It is supposed to be in European style: is it?

B. Yes! But we should call it Hibiya Public Gardens. It is something like Kensington Gardens, near Hyde Park, in London. T. Then what is a park?

B. Well, Ueno Pk. and Shiba Pk. are what we call parks. A park has many trees, and few, if any, flowers.

T. What do you like best about this Park?

B. (pointing to Band Stand.)-What structure is

this?

B.-It is the Band Stand in Hibiya Park.

B. For open-air concerts. Instrumental concerts are given there every fortnight. I hope that Fortnightly Vocal Concerts will soon be given

toc.

[blocks in formation]

T.-I hope so too; it would be pleasant to listen to the music on hot summer evenings.
