Those who have seen only the carelessly coloured copies which have occurred in the market of late years, can form no idea of the beauty of the present without inspection. It now challenges competition with the finest Entomological Works yet produced in this or any other country. The merits of Drary's work are well known, and attested by a host of writers. The late President of the Linnæan Society, Sir James Ed. Smith, says of it, "The exquisite work of Drury displays the complete insect in a degree of perfection that leaves nothing to be desired;" Mr. Swainson in his Zoological Illustrations, observes, "For the very accurate and excellent figures contained in Drury's Work, the scientific are indebted to Moses Harris, a most assiduous and observing entomologist, whose memory will be long cherished by our Aurelians;" and in the last edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, the writer of the article on Entomology, declares that "Drury's Work has not been surpassed in beauty and accuracy of execution by any of the sumptuous efforts of the present day." "The acknowledged value of the figures contained in Drury's Illustrations, and the extreme rarity of many of the Insects figured therein, will always render this work important to the entomologist. Drury's Collection was exceedingly choice and extensive, and occupied nearly thirty years in its formation; all the specimens were in the highest state of preservation, and a very considerable number unique. "Of the estimation in which the former edition of Drury's work was held by Linnæus, Fabricius, and others, the constant reference to it will sufficiently prove. The Rev. Wm. Kirby calls it opus entomologicus splendidissimus,' and the late Mr. Haworth describes it as 'a most beautiful and valuable work on entomology.""
