To the State Conservation and Development Commission: Gentlemen: I have the honor to transmit and to recommend for publication as Bulletin 27 of the Virginia Geological Survey Series of reports a manuscript and illustrations of a report on Oil and Gas Possibilities at Early Grove, Scott County, Virginia, by Charles Butts. The general purpose of this bulletin is to show that there is a possibility of finding gas or oil near Early Grove, Scott County, Virginia, and likewise to give a detailed section of the Mississippian rocks in which are found the salt and gypsum deposits several miles north of this point at Saltville, Virginia. This is the first publication of a detailed geological section of these beds, giving their fossils and correlating them with formations in other parts of the eastern United States. This is one of a series of reports which will be prepared by Mr. Butts in connection with the detailed mapping of the stratigraphy of the Valley of southwestern Virginia which he is engaged in at the present time, under a cooperative agreement between the State and Federal surveys. Respectfully submitted, WILBUR A. NELSON, Approved for publication: State Conservation and Development Commission. By E. O. Fippin, Executive Secretary. |
