CAP. XV.

An alt for reformation of abuses in goldsmiths.

WHE

HERE certain evil-difpofed goldsmiths deceitfully do make and fell plate, and other gold and filver wares, to the great defrauding of her Majesty and her good fubjects: (2) For remedy whereof, be it enacted by the authority of this prefent parliament, That no goldfmith from the twentieth day of April next coming fhall work, fell, exchange or caufe to be wrought, fold or exchanged, any plate or other goldfmiths wares of gold, lefs in fineness than that of two and twenty carrects, and that he ufe no fother, amell or other ftuffings whatsoever, in any of their works, more than is necessary for the finishing the fame; (3) and that they take not above the rate of twelve-pence for the ounce of gold, befides the fashion, (more than the buyer fhall or may be allowed for the fame at the Queen's exchange or mint) upon pain to forfeit the value of the thing so sold or exThe fineness changed: (4) and that from the faid twentieth day of April no of filver plate, goldfmith thall make, fell or exchange in any place within this and what the realm, any plate or goldsmiths wares of filver, lefs in fineness goldfmith hall take more than that of eleven ounces twopeny weight; (5) nor take above than the buyer the rate of twelve pence for every pound weight of plate or wares fhall have for of filver, befides the fashion, more than the buyer fhall or it at the mint. may be allowed for the fame at the Queen's exchange or Enforced by 6 Geo. 1. c. 11. mint; (6) nor put to fale, exchange or fell any plate or goldfmiths work of filver, before he has fet his own mark to fo much thereof as conveniently may bear the fame; (7) upon pain to forfeit the value of the thing fo fold or exchanged. Perfons dwelling in the counties of Somerfet, Gloucester and Wilts, out of corporate towns, may make clothes, notwithstanding the ftatute of 4 & 5 P. & M. c. 5. &c. Repealed by 21 Jac. 1. c. 28. f. 11.

The morrow after the quarter-feffions holden next after Easter in Kent, the wardens and commonalty of the lands contributory to Rochefter bridge fhall for ever affemble at the caftle of Rochester, and there elect by the most voices, two perfons of the fame commonalty to be wardens of the fame bridge, and twelve persons of the fame commonalty to be affiftants to the said two wardens, for one year after the feast of Pentecoft then following.

following: and the two wardens fo chofen fhall do their endeavour that year to benefit the faid bridge; and fhall receive the fines, rents and revenues of the lands belonging to the bridge, and of all contribution money payable to the use of the fame bridge, and fhall answer and pay out of the fame as cause shall require. The new wardens fhall be bound to the former wardens to make an account. The old wardens shall account the Thursday in Whitfun week. The wardens and assistants shall fubfcribe to all leases made of the bridges lands; which leases shall be made but of fuch effect as tenant in tail may do by the ftatute of 32 H. 8. c. 28. and for no fines. And every seven years there fhall be made a terrar of the lands leafed. No owners or tenants of lands contributory Altered by to the maintenance of the faid bridge, fhall be affeffed to pay towards 1 Annæ, ft. 1. the maintenance thereof, but only when the rents or profits of the lands belonging to the same be not sufficient.

CAP. XVIII.

The county of Gloucester and the county of Monmouth shall stand for ever chargeable for the maintenance, repairing and new-making of Chepflow-Bridge, as often as need fhall require, viz. either of them for fuch part and moiety as lieth in the middle of the ftream of the water of Wye, on the fides of the lordships of Chepflow and Tydenham: and for the affeffment, collection and employing of the money thereupon to be spent, fuch order shall be obferved as is appointed by the ftatute of 22 H. 8. c. 5. REP. 3 Jac. 1. c. 23. and other provifions made relating hereto.

CAP. XIX.

Every perfon which shall be immediate owner, landlord or terre-tenant of any houfe, lands or tenements within the city of Chichester, in feefimple, fee-tail, for life or years, fhall from time to time, or by the affignment of the mayor of the city, caufe to be paved with good paving-ftones, along, from and against his house, lands, &c. adjoining to the street, fo much of the faid Itreet as in length to the chanel, upon pain of forfeiture of three fhillings four-pence for every yard fquare not paved. The leffees for years, or at will, may defaulk fo much of their lord's rent as they shall bestow in such paving, unless they shall otherwife covenant.

An act for the repairing and amending of the bridges and highways near unto the city of Oxford.

Orafmuch as your Highness's univerfity and city of Oxford hath received from your Highness, and your noble progenitors, great privileges and prerogatives, as alfo the inhabitants and dwellers within the compass and precinct of five miles thereunto adjoining, as chiefly by a ftatute made in the fecond and third year of King Philip and Queen Mary, intituled, An act that no purveyor fhall take any grain corn or other victual within the compass or precinct of five miles of the faid city: and in the thirteenth year of your Majesty's reign 13 El. c. 21. hath been renewed and enlarged: (2) by means whereof the inhabitants aforefaid, not only to themfelves, but to their pofterity, by the markets of your faid city, is like to reap much gain, profit, commodity and advantage, by utterance of their corn, grain and victual: faving that the ways, bridges and paffages leading from your Highness manors, and other places of this realm, to your Highness's city, (being for the moft part water-works) within these two years, by force of waters are fo decayed, faln down and impaired, that your Highness and subjects, with your and their carriage, travelling that way, as others travelling out of all parts of this realm, are much annoyed and in

T this prefent feffion of parliament by prorogation holden at Westminster the fixteenth day of January in the three and twentieth year of the reign of our most gracious Sovereign lady Elizabeth, by the grace of God, of England, France and Ireland, Queen, defender of the faith, &c. and there continued until the eighteenth of March following: To the high pleasure of Almighty God, and weal publick of this realm, were enacted as followeth.

CAP. I.

An act to retain the Queen's majesty's fubjects in their due obedience.

WHERE fithence the ftatute made in the thirteenth year of the reign of the Queen our fovereign lady, intituled, An act against the bringing in, and putting in execution of bulls, writings and inftruments, and other fuperftitious things from the fee of Rome, divers evil-affected perfons have practifed, contrary to the meaning of the faid ftatute, by other means than by bulls or infruments written or printed, to withdraw divers the Queen's majefty's fubjects from their natural obedience to her Majefly, to obey "the faid ufurped authority of Rome, and in respect of the fame to

perfwade great numbers to withdraw their due obedience from her Majefty's laws, established for the due fervice of Almighty God.
