Excerpt from The Application of the Roman Alphabet to All the Oriental Languages: Contained in a Series of Papers

Mr. Thompson's work will doubtless find a ready sale among Europeans, but I trust that none of our colleges has it in contem plation to teach Arabic, Persian, or Hindee words in Roman characters. This would indeed be ultra radicalism, and I cannot therefore vote for any sanction being given by the School Book Society, even in receiving a dedication from the author, unless the words for the use of European students be inserted in the title page. Besides, before giving countenance to such an important work as a Dictionary, we should have a report on its execution from some competent person.
