LI.

A WIND came up out of the sea

and said 'O mists, make room for me.' It hailed the ships and cried 'Sail on,

ye mariners, the night is gone.' And hurried landward far away, crying 'Awake! it is the day.'

It said unto the forest 'Shout!

hang all your leafy banners out!'

It touched the wood-bird's folded wing, and said 'O bird, awake, and sing.'

It whispered to the fields of corn

'Bow down, and hail the coming morn.' It crossed the churchyard with a sigh,

and said 'Not yet! in quiet lie.'

EXORIENS pelago ventus 'mihi cedite' dixit.

'detersi, nebulæ, de regione poli:'

occupat hinc naves-'nautæ, date carbasa; funes solvite cessantes: nox vetat acta moram.'

tum procul agricolas pernici suscitat ala:
'rumpite jam somnos' increpat; 'orta dies.'

protinus invadit silvam, 'clamateque' dixit
'arboreæ voces: pandite signa, come!'
compositas nido plumas deturbat amice-
'lux rediit: vigiles edite carmen, aves.'
degravat incumbens leni sata flava susurro,

dixit et 'accedens sic veneranda Dea est.' inde per Esquilias ducens suspiria—' noctem

carpite adhuc solvi nesciat ista quies.'

FAIR marble, tell to future days that here two virgin sisters lie,

whose life employed each tongue in praise, whose death gave tears to every eye. In stature, beauty, years and fame, together as they grew, they shone;

so much alike, so much the same,

that death mistook them both for one.

LII.

Hoc ventura legant in marmore sæcla, sororum sub sacro innuptum par recubare solo.

Lingua hominum laudes vivarum nulla tacebat ;

sublatis, nullæ non maduere genæ.

Corpore præstanti, famaque, et dulcibus annis dum crescunt, similis crevit utrique nitor. Par adeo species mirantem prodidit, ut Mors unam crediderit, sustuleritque duas.

LIII.

THOU art no lingerer in monarch's hall

a joy thou art and wealth to all!

a bearer of hope unto land and sea;
sunbeam, what gift hath the world like thee?

Thou art walking the billows, and ocean smiles; thou hast touched with glory his thousand isles ; thou hast lit up the ships and the feathery foam, and gladdened the sailor, like words from home. To the solemn depths of the forest shades

thou art streaming on through their green arcades; and the quivering leaves that have caught thy glow like fireflies dance to the pools below.

I looked on the mountains-a vapour lay

folding their heights in dark array:

thou brakest forth and the mist became

a crown and mantle of living flame.
