XXIII. EST frondibus vox: est fluviis suus sermo, nec ullis non resonat locis: ignes ubi et tellus et aer et pelagus nequeunt silere. Quicquid videmus nam penitus subit urgetque Numen, quaque sinat mori, qua lege sub dio morari, qua spatium moderetur ævi, nobis sub imo pectore disserit arcana: Phœbi proditur aureo fulgore et in cæli tonantis nubibus, et reboantis inter silvæ labores cum fremitu gravis auditur Euri : I feel him in the silent dews by grateful earth betrayed; I feel him in the gentle showers, the soft south-wind, the breath of flowers, the sunshine and the shade. I see him, hear him, everywhere, when slumber's duský curtains fall, I' the silent hour of night. C. BOWLES. nec tacito secus cum rore per gratas vel almo terra vices recreatur imbre : qua lenis horti fert Notus halitum, seu Phoebus abdit seu retegit jubar, ubique præsentem moveri stare Deum fateor, per umbræ per lucis horas, perque silentium crebrasque voces:-at propius subit cum somnus obduxit tenebras, paxque regit taciturna noctem. XXIV. THEN let the chill Scirocco blow, and gird us round with hills of snow; or else go whistle to the shore, and make the hollow mountains roar, whilst we together jovial sit careless, and crowned with mirth and wit, where, though bleak winds confine us home, our fancies round the world shall roam. We'll think of all the friends we know, and drink to all worth drinking to; when, having drunk all thine and mine, we rather shall want healths than wine. XXIV. HIBERNAS foribus licet obsessis Boreas accumulet nives, aut in litore sibilet baccheturque fremens per cava montium : dum presso ad lepidas dapes securi cubito nos fruimur jocis ; et quamquam cohibet trucis ipsos vis hiemis, libera mens procul quo ferri libet avolat. quot dignos cyathis novimus hospites. propinabimus invicem, donec defuerint quot mihi quot tibi cari nominis audiant, at non defuerint vina bibentibus. |
