"We give the author every credit for an attempt to turn fiction to noble purposes, which it has served well formerly, and may worthily serve again. . . . Marjorie, the heroine, is a woman, and has a character,-no slight thing in those days."

The Civil Service Gazette.

"The perfection of the young divine (Renwick), and of his beautiful affianced bride, are dwelt upon with unmistakeable zest, and the description of Renwick's extraordinary labours, capture, trial, and execution is particularly powerful."

[blocks in formation]

"This is an ambitious but clever book. Mr. Hope has obviously taken Thackeray's 'Snob Papers' as his model, and preaches to excellent effect on the frivolities and hypocrisies of society."

Bell's Weekly Messenger.

"Like everything Mr. Hope writes, these essays are practical, sensible, and calculated to be as useful as they are suggestive of improvement in various directions. The satire is keen and pointed, without being too sarcastic or bitter; the object being practical, so as to make it wholly free from everything offensive."

[blocks in formation]

"In this book we find ourselves among a real set of boys, and feel, as much as it is possible for a grey head to feel, very much as if we were back at school again, in that little mimic world which is never found again, look for it as we may, in the big real world." The Athenæum.

"The Whitminster Boys in the book furnished very pleasant reading, and we take a cordial interest in all their doings: they stories they tell in their dormitories are charmingly absurd."

"A book for boys by Mr. Hope stands in no need of recommendation. His previous tales have proved such favourites, that the simple announcement of his name is sufficient to ensure for his new volume a wide circulation among the host of youths who are let loose from school about Christmas-time. These stories are admirably suited, in their subject and style, to excite and attract all juvenile readers. They have the rare advantage of really good illustrations, and the style of binding is the prettiest and most artistic we have yet come across." The Liverpool Albion.

"Treading in the footsteps of W. G. Kingston, Mr. Hope has already placed himself in the van as a writer of pleasing

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

The News of the World.

INSURANCE SOCIETY, 1, New Bridge-street, Blackfriars, London, E.C.

The oldest Insurance Office in existence. Founded and still conducted on the Mutual System.

Large returns made to Members in each Department.

The whole of the Profits are divided annually amongst the Members of Five Years' standing and upwards-there being no Shareholders. The rate of abatement of Premium thereby given for the current year on Life Policies is 60 per cent. for the Old Series, and 50 per cent. for the New Series.

The rate of return on Septennial Fire Policies (charged at 18. 6d. per cent.) is 66 per cent.

The Directors are willing to appoint as Agents persons of good position and character.

[blocks in formation]

Head Office: 6, St. Andrew-square, Edinburgh.
London Office: 18, King William-street, E.C.
Established 1837.

The PREMIUMS usually charged for 1,000l. (with Profits) will here assure in most cases 1.200l. to 1,250l. from the first-being equivalent to an immediate and certain Bonus of 20 to 25 per cent.

The whole SURPLUS belongs to the Members, and, being reserved for those who prove good lives, large Bonuses in addition have been, and may be expected to be, given.

POLICIES, say for 1 000l., which have shared at the three septennial investigations, have already been increased to 1,400l., 1,600l., and even 1,001.

Its Terms are thus well calculated to meet the requirements of intending Assurers. They are specially adapted to the case of Provisions under Family Settlements or otherwise, where it is of importance to secure from the first, for the smallest present outlay, a competent provision, of definite amount, in the case of early death. The ACCUMULATED FUNDS exceed 1,750,000l. Notwithstanding its low rates, no Office of equal age has so large a Furd, or shows so large an increase from year to year.

Copies of the Annual Report, with every information, will be given on application.

This Company insures Carriages of every description against accidents of all kinds, fire excepted.

The liability to damage from collision and other causes, incurred by vehicles of every kind, is well known to be most considerable; and this Company has been established for the purpose of affording to owners of Carriages the means of insuring against the losses occasioned by the above-mentioned contingencies, and which so often entail such heavy outlays to owners of this description of property.

The advantages offered to Insurers combine a low scale of Premiums, together with a prompt and liberal settlement of all claims for loss and damage.
