ly, that he was the advocate, the true man of the peo ple;-and among a multitude of other vile doctrines of the same Magazine, the barefaced and revolting blasphemy under the article (No. 71.) of "Organic Remains," in which we are told that "The geologist may be considered as the historian of events relating to the animate and inanimate creation previous to the period when Sacred history begins," and whereby the express declaration of the Revelation of the Almighty Creator-by whom "the generations of the heavens and of the earth were created," yea, even "the heavens and the earth and all the host of them"-is at once pronounced to be glaringly false and directly absurd ;all these impious attempts, we say, that have been so sedulously directed of late, to undermine the only stable foundation of the people's Christian morality and eternal well-being; and which have been made to see the light, at the instance of the Society of these Noble legislators, have not as yet been able to yield to their philanthropic propagators that abundant crop, which they may probably have anticipated, from their laborious and incessant plying of such diabolical engines. Hence we are free to confess, that our philosophic Statesmen, deem it still necessary to regard the sense, the decency, the morality, the religion of the English Nation. Their covert and insidious designs must as yet be graced by such public, complimentary effusions. The national recognition of our Divine allegiance to the over-ruling Majesty of Heaven,-and the venerable bulwarks, that our ancestors piously upreared for the perpetual maintenance of that holy and righteous cause, dare not as yet with impunity be openly or rashly assailed. Such an attempt, if not too insidious to be detected, would still draw down upon the miscreants-who would dare to make the breach, or demolish the nation's time-honoured, sacred fabric --such an overpowering torrent of well-directed indignation, as would leave the perpretators of such infernal sacrilege, not a vestige of their spoil or rapine, but the eternal, indelible marks of everlasting infamy,

and righteous retribution. The experienced and reflecting people of England are not yet prepared to cancel, by a public decree of the admirers of French jacobinism, their allegiance to their God. They are not prepared to dethrone God, in order to destroy man. They glory, as well as they ought, in that National establishment, which conveys through her Apostolic ministry, to the Sanctuary of heaven, the National incense of thanksgiving, prayer, praise, and acknowledgments of willing dependence on that Almighty arm, which is protectingly abroad upon all the nations of the earth. They know that their National Religion is to the whole social system, as the very breath of its nostrils. They are attached to the shepherds of their folds; for whilst their pastors belong to a grade of society, where all the distinctions of birth, merit, talent, and learning so conspicuously shine,—and as such, are not unfit companions for the proudest palaces and princes of the land,-yet with that enlarged, refined, and cultivated feeling, that so necessarily accompanies the union of extensive learning, and genuine piety, they feel an almost ecstatic delight, to gladden with their attractive, and encouraging presence, the lowly cottages of the forsaken poor, the widow, the fatherless, and the afflicted,—diffusing around the consolatory balm of Religion. As well on the loftiest pinnacle, as in the lowliest vale of life, they are suited to appear as becomes their sacred character, with a comprehension and cultivation of mind and heart, proportioned to the various objects of their professional regard. The observing people of England, from a mixture of national habit, experience, and penetration, can quickly discern between the disinterested, independent, and benevolent ministrations and visits of their conscientious and highly educated Clergy-and the tradesmanlike, cringing, officious interference of the vulgar, uneducated, self-made, ecclesiastical volunteers, who give just as they get, and whose services are generally so nicely proportioned, according to the graduated scale of all such calculating, dependent hirelings. We say

nothing of their profane intrusion into the Ministry; the reflections in our occasional Notes beneath, will we presume, effectually silence their barking at least at us, and show them in their proper light. And further, the good sense of the English nation, we may venture to assure the Jacobinical despots of infidel liberalism, is not yet so brutified, as to prompt them either to live, or die like beasts. They do not yet hold death to be an everlasting sleep. They have not yet dedicated their hallowed temples to the Strumpets of French revolutionists. Many, very many, scorn to barter the immutable, and eternal laws of the moral World of Divine Revelation, for the varying and destructive laws of the physical World of human passions, and capricious expediency. Amid the sweeping hurricanes even of popular rage, they still would cling to no other law, than the immutable laws of right, of truth, and of their pure Religion. They prefer, in short, the unalterable sanctions of spotless heaven, to the shifting expediency of sin-polluted man. In the former case, error is impossible, and the promises immutable; in the latter, passion must predominate, aud the present interest of self, must bear sovereign and uncontrolled rule, to the total neglect of the future. Nor have the population of England been miserably exposed to the wretched fate of their Irish brethren. No, they have not been like them, shut up within the prison-house of degrading superstitions and barbarous ignorance, beyond the walls of which, not one single ray of light is allowed to penetrate; insomuch that in the bosom of this infallible church, are creatures, whose half-human exterior only distinguishes them from the brutes they feed, and whose ferocious atrocities are the only marks which tell us, that the suggestions of their reason, have any necessary connection with the agency of their will. And thus unlike their English brethren, not only because they are every where distinguished by the continual reproaches, even to a common proverb, of inveterate and incurable ignorance and superstition; but more

especially for being perpetually the deluded and unfortunate dupes of a gang of unprincipled, talking demagogues; at whose nod, these wretched automatons are driven to the foulest deeds of blood, or rapine, or rebellion; and who are taught likewise by their spiritual instructors to pay to these designing orators almost as much deference, as to the Blessed Turf or Stones, that have so generally issued of late from their Mass houses, for an infallible prevention to the ravages of Cholera, among the faithful!!! Thus whilst the Irish peasantry are tossed, whirled, and tumbled about, at the mere pleasure of their spiritual and oratorical guides; and whose atrocities have been permitted, aye, encouraged to exult over the unredressed persecutions and unprotected rights of an innocent and unoffending clergy :-far different is the condition of the English population, the majority of which, is blessed with a due proportion of intellectual power, directed by the impulse of the purest form of the purest Religion. The aspiring, domineering, popular leaders, therefore, of our times, must as yet profess what they do not feel-must compliment in the midst of all their hollowness-and have recourse to the imperceptible, and insidious march of covert and undermining schemes, to sap what they cannot batter, and to subdue what law, right, and reason must for ever refuse them. Many more attempts, by means of their cheap, infidel publications, must be made, before that the train be fully prepared for the ravages of universal combustion. As yet the lance which Lord Brougham, threateningly poised over the high Aristocracy of the land,— when he menaced the House of Lords, as to the consequences that must ensue from their rejection of his Local Courts Bill,-is pointless and powerless. His Lordship's threat of there being a "Newspaper in every village," is a slippery subterfuge, that speaks neither magnificently nor inordinately for his head or heart. The lowest villagers can understand that the "Poor Man's Bill" may be made a stepping-stone for conferring on "the Great Man," an unconstitutional degree

of lordly, and unprecedented patronage. They know that such wholesale changes are made at exorbitant expenses to the nation, to pay the interest of which, their immediate employers are impoverished, and consequently themselves ground to the dust, to support this "Great Man" in his views of imperial ambition, and enormous self-aggrandizement. They are more disposed to listen to those who suffer with them, than to those, who by their ridiculous, legislative quixotism, contrive to make the advocacy of the poor, the splendid pretences, for scaling the ladder of wealth, and power, and despotism. We ourselves think that Lord Brougham had carried his point better, by leaving this argument, to the secret undermining of his Penny Magazines. His Lordship's opposers cannot but have been stung to the most supercilious contempt of such rabble arguments. The generous, open countenances of true Patricians, cannot well brook to be besmeared with the filth of those upstart Plebeians, who are always the more insolent and impudent, in the same proportion, as they are conscious of the innate baseness and inherent vulgarity, that are veiled but by the slender covering of arrogance, and presumption. Doubtless, the remembrance of the notorious Danton's arguments, passed before the minds of many Noble Lords upon the occsasion. When Danton, the most reckless and wholesale of assassins, was asked for an argument on some horrid proposal of massacre, "My answer,' said he, "is in the streets;" and quickly running to the alarm bell, rang it, and was answered by the assemblage of his mobs, which soon put his principles into the true Republican form. We cannot but in common justice offer our meed of admiration to the astonishing genius of the Lord Chancellor, and to another wit, who is labouring on another field, but who began his course in circumstances perfectly similar and attractive—we mean, Mr. Cobbett. These two illustrious persons, we presume, would supply materials for a tale of real romance. They sprang from the same cradle, but like all meteorous fires, diverging in
