IMPORTANT TO BOOKSELLERS AND LIBRARIANS.

WILL BE READY IN SEPTEMBER:

WHITAKER'S REFERENCE CATALOGUE

OF CURRENT LITERATURE,

Containing the Full Titles of WORKS NOW IN PRINT AND ON SALE by the Publishers of the United Kingdom. Also an Index to the Titles of the Chief Works therein contained.

ALL Booksellers and all Bookbuyers have frequently experienced the inconvenience and annoyance of not being able to put their hands upon a particular Publisher's Catalogue just at the moment it was required; and frequently the sale of the book sought for has been lost in consequence of its full title and particulars not being forthcoming.

Little care is taken of Retail Catalogues: when received, they are, by the more intelligent Booksellers, sent out to customers, but, more frequently, no matter how costly their production, they are treated as mere waste paper and destroyed; very rarely indeed are they preserved for future reference.

In the REFERENCE CATALOGUE are bound together the Retail Catalogues of all Publishers, forming a volume which the Bookseller may put into his Customer's hand. to make a selection from, or which he may send out on any occasion that his Customer cannot come to the shop to select for himself.

In the Catalogues thus combined will be found the full titles of all the books in print, and frequently some descriptive notice or critique, or other information which Bookbuyers wish to see, and which all Booksellers find so necessary in their every-day business.

The Index which is prefixed affords a ready Key to the books contained in the Catalogues, and by the aid of this every modern book on a given subject can be found without difficulty. In most cases this is possible, even when title and author's name are unknown to the inquirer. The Index to the last edition contained upward of 35,000 entries.

The work will probably form a volume of upward of 3000 pages, and will be issued in strong half binding. Unless shipping directions are given with order, copies will be forwarded by express, unpaid. As the edition is limited, orders should be sent in at once.

Price, $2.50, NET.

SEASON OF 1880.

To RETAIL DEALERS:

The Summer Catalogue, issued now for three years, has been found so useful and profitable by enterprising dealers, that it has become a regular feature of the trade. The fourth issue, in a special pam phlet adapted for imprint circulation all through the summer, will be published in connection with THE PUBLISHERS' WEEKLY of June 19th.

The imp rint editions will contain, in addition to a catalogue of guide-books and light literature for summer reading, an entirely new selection of reading matter both of a practical and entertaining character, chiefly intended for the use and amusement of tourists, pleasure-seekers, and visitors of summer resorts.

Booksellers should remember that, while summer is usually a dull time, the sales of light literature, etc., can be pushed to make a successful business even in this season. The classes who travel are of course those who have money to spend, even in dull times, and the summer is the time when very many bookbuyers do the greater part of their reading. Booksellers at or near summer resorts should therefore especially avail themselves of this publication, while city dealers should remember that it will be also useful to tempt stay-at-homes to make investments or to follow up customers otherwise out of reach.

Orders for imprint editions at subscription rates should be sent in at once.

TERMS FOR EDITIONS WITH IMPRINT, PAYABLE IN ADVANCE.
