SIÈCLE. d PUBLIÉ PAR UNE SOCIÉTÉ D'ÉMINENTS PROFESSEURS DE LITTÉRATURE FRANÇAISE EN ANGLETERRE. Price per Volume, in Paper Wrapper, 9d.; in Cloth, 1s. THE THÉATRE FRANÇAIS DU XIXE SIÈCLE will comprise the chefs-d'œuvre of AUGIER, BOUILLY, DELAVIGNE, DUMAS, VICTOR HUGO, LEBRUN, PONSARD, SAND, SANDEAU, SARDOU, SCRIBE, and DE VIGNY, carefully edited, and correctly and elegantly printed. In no form can the French language, as now spoken, its spirit and idioms, be studied to greater advantage than in the masterpieces of the contemporary French Drama. This fact almost every intelligent French teacher acknowledges. The study of well-selected plays has the great advantage of bringing under the notice of the pupil a constant succession of well chosen idiomatic phrases. The pupil cannot help retaining a great number of such phrases, and acquires thus the gift of French Conversation much more rapidly than by reading extracts or stories. Each play is preceded by a short critical notice, and accompanied by such notes as are indispensable, and a careful rendering of the most difficult expressions. Professors and Teachers may add such explanations as they consider desirable. SÉRIE I. 1. HUGO, Hernani, by GUSTAVE MASSON, B.A., Harrow School, Examiner in the University of London. 3. DELAVIGNE, Louis XI., by the Rev. P. H. E. BRETTE,B.D., Head Master of the French School, Christ's Hospital, Examiner in the University of London. (In preparation.) 12. SCRIBE, Valérie, by A. ROULIER, B.A., Bedford College, and Charterhouse School. The present series is strictly limited to the French dramatic literature of the nineteenth century, and the specimens now before us contrast very favourably with a similar series published in Germany. The notes are of a more ambitious character, though strictly limited to what is absolutely necessary; the material execution is infinitely superior, and the whole series will, no doubt, occupy a select and permanent position in the library of every student of modern French literature. The various branches of theatrical composition are represented by choice examples: the tragedy in in all its stately character contributes 'Louis XI.,' 'Marie Stuart,' and 'Les Enfants d'Edouard'; the romantic drama gives us 'Hernani'; Scribe's 'Verre d'Eau,' and Alexandre Dumas's Demoiselles de Saint-Cyr' illustrate high comedy; whilst 'Michel Perrin,' and 'Le Diplomate,' L'Abbé de l'Epée' introduce us to the lighter vaudeville. One of the chief advantages of the new recueil is that it accustoms the reader to colloquial French, and familiarises him with the idiomatic phrases and constructions now in use. It is by keeping this point in view that the very indifferently got-up series published in Germany commanded at once such success; the same popularity cannot, therefore, but reward the intelligent activity of the Publishers." School Board Chronicle. "Le Théatre Français du Dix-Neuviéme Siécle.' Among those already published are Hugo's Hernani,' Delavigne's 'Les Enfants d'Edouard,' Scribe's Diplomate,' 'Le Verre d'Eau,' Sandeau's 'Mademoiselle de la Seiglière,' Bouilly's l'Abbé de l'Epée,' &c., &c. Nearly all these plays, it will be seen, are by leaders of the revolt against the classic drama, and they embody in themselves sufficient explanation of the success of that revolt. Each play is given in the form of a handy little volume, and is carefully edited with notes. The series deserves the attention of students of the French language and literature." Scotsman. "Cheapness and good print are not the only attractive features of this edition; it has a preface, giving a short and clear sketch of the plot of the play, and notes explaining the various idioms, which prove such stumblingblocks in the way of beginners."
