SKANDINAVISCHE BYRON-ÜBERSETZUNGEN. Kölbing nennt in seiner neuen Byronausgabe keine einzige schwedische übersetzung der werke des dichters. Dies veranlasste mich nachzusehen, welche dichtungen Byron's in eine der skandinavischen sprachen übertragen seien, und das ergebniss dieser nachforschungen theile ich hier mit. Für das meiste war ich dabei auf die hülfsmittel unsrer bibliothek angewiesen, die nur einige wenige der genannten übersetzungen selbst besitzt; in bezug auf die dänische und isländische Byronlitteratur dagegen bin ich herrn bibliotheksassistent cand. mag. O. S. Jensen in Kopenhagen zu grossem danke verpflichtet, der auf dr. Kålund's anregung hin die güte hatte, mein verzeichniss der einschlägigen schriften auf der dortigen universitätsbibliothek zu controlliren und zu ergänzen. Auf absolute vollständigkeit macht meine liste keinen anspruch; besonders in schwed. zeitschriften oder büchern erschienene übertragungen einzelner gedichte mögen hier und da fehlen. Newstead Abbey, September 14, 1808. Signed "Byron." Relative to the getting up of a play at his residence. "I have settled the Dram. pers., and can do without ladies." [Cf. Prothero's ausg. der briefe, I p. 189]. 2d. Lord Byron. An Autograph Letter, dated March 28, 1808 (when he was twenty years of age). Quarto. 4 full pages. Incomplete, lacking last page, and not signed, but in his unmistakable chirography, . This letter has been printed, and a pencil notation indicates that the following was suppressed: "I am still in or rather near town. residing with a nymph who is now on the sopha, vis-a-vis, whilst I am scribling." Decidedly characteristic. 3d. Lady Noel Byron, wife of Lord Byron. Two Autograph Notes of formal nature. 1842. 4th. Catherine Gordon Byron, mother of Lord Byron. Autograph Letter, signed. Duodecimo. 8 pages. 1808. Of very unusual interest, referring with much feeling to the Edinburgh Review's savage review of "Hours of Idleness." She writes: "I received a letter from Byron yesterday, and he abuses himself worse than the Edinburgh Reviewer. He says, if I have any regard for him, I never will mention his Poetry to him more, as he wishes to forget it . . . He has done with it forever . . he has been better treated than he deserved. . . has now no pleasure in his employment .. God help him if he is so easily discouraged." She concludes by relating a mishap of a lady-love of Byron's, "Poor Eliza, love can never exist long without hope!" A finer letter than this one cannot exist. Exceedingly rare. 5th.
