Most gestions arose from the circumstances e was placed, and he found it advancasionally to refer to them as other rred. When compelled, by sickness, n India, his vade mecum remained in couched and forgotten, until a friend m to compose a work for the informanary candidates at home, and for the naries abroad. In compliance with and knowing from experience the a compendium of missionary duty, he did not require much persuasion to sit down to the task. On looking over the notes already in his possession, they seemed to contain an outline of such a work as was desired; and the circumstance of their having been originally composed in the midst of missionary scenes and occupations, will, perhaps, be thought to invest them with a degree of authenticity not readily conceded to observations made in retirement, and from the information of others. The author has submitted his manuscript to the perusal of two or three friends, and availed himself of some valuable observations with which they favoured him. The work might have been considerably extended from other sources; but that would have increased it to an inconvenient size, as the primary object was to provide the missionary with a portable and useful companion in his journeys among the heathen.
