PREFACE.

THIS review is issued as a companion volume to the annual report "Bihar and Orissa in 1922 ". It corresponds to and supersedes the chapters in the old Administration report, which were known as the Red Letter Chapters ", and is intended to give an introductory account of the the administrative history, constitution, economic and industrial resources, and systems of land tenure throughout the province, and of the various changes that have occurred during the last ten years. It is intended to be more in the nature of a handy book of reference than a connected narrative and it repeats and brings up to date the information in the last decennial report. A new feature in this year's review is the chapter on the Archæology of the province, which has been contributed by Mr. J. A. Page, Superintendent, Archæological Survey, Central Circle. The review will not be issued annually, but it is intended to revise and reissue it every ten years.
