365 RICHARDS (NATHANAEL). Poems Sacred and Satyricall, viz. Prayers Paradice. The World. The Flesh. The Iesuits. The Devill. (Etc.) By Nathanael Richards. Engraved frontispiece portrait by T. Rawlins, and engraved title-page preceding the printed one.

Printed at London by T. Paine, for H. Blunden at the Castle
in Cornehill. 1641

Small 8vo, green straight-grain morocco, gilt tooling and edges.
Signature of a former owner on title-page.

FIRST EDITION. The engraved portrait by Rawlins first appeared the
year before in "Messalina". 18 poems appear here for the first time;
5 appeared with 24 others in 1630 in the "Celestiall Pvblican", of which
there are but two perfect copies known: it was reissued in 1632 with
a new title as "Poems. Divine, Morall, and Satyricall”, and the Huth-
Chew copy is the only one known. (See the preceding number.)
This copy of the "Poems" has the dedication "To The Right VVorthy
and Nobly Disposed Thomas Soame" in prose. The other issue has
this dedication in verse. From the fact that the prose version has the
signature mark and ornament like the book, while the verse dedication
has neither, it seems probable that the prose is earlier. The Chew-
Huntington copy.

FIRST EDITION. This copy has the Dedication in verse-"To The
Heavenly Lover of Divine Verse", the leaf containing the prose
Dedication (see the preceding number) being laid in. Mr. Chew has
written on the fly-leaf: "This copy is one of the rare issue in which
the dedication is in verse-not in prose like my other copy." With the
E. B. Holden and J. Perlhaw bookplates.
