POEMS,

CHIEFLY IN THE

SCOTTISH DIALECT,

BY

ROBERT BURNS.

THE Simple Bard, unbroke by rules of Art,

He pours the wild effufions of the heart;

And if infpir'd, 'tis Nature's pow'rs inspire;

Her's all the melting thrill, and her's the kindling fire.

ANONYMOUS.

KILMARNOCK: PRINTED BY JOHN WILSON,

M,DCC,LXXXVI.

THE FAMOUS FIRST EDITION

[NUMBER 55]

55 BURNS (ROBERT). Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, by Robert Burns.

Kilmarnock: Printed by John Wilson. M,DCC,LXXXVI

8vo, boards, calf back. Measuring 8 by 5 inches. A former owner has made some notations on the Contents pages.

FIRST EDITION.

A fine copy, and a very clean one, except that two pages are slightly soiled, and tiny pieces torn from the top margin of two leaves.

[SEE ILLUSTRATION, PAGE 21]

56 BURNS (ROBERT). Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. Frontispiece portrait by Beugo after Nasmyth.

Edinburgh: Printed for the Author, and sold by
William Creech. M,DCC,LXXXVII

8vo, red straight-grain morocco, gilt edges.
SECOND EDITION (First Edinburgh Edition). Bibliographers have
considered that there was one Edinburgh Edition in two issues. We
have carefully compared the two so-called issues and find that the
book was entirely reprinted and issued in two editions by Creech in
1787. The reason for the reprinting was that the number of Sub-
scribers was so large that Burns was obliged to print a second set
of the sheets of the text: the preliminary matter was not reprinted.
We believe this to be the First Edinburgh Edition, with the misprint
"stinking", afterwards corrected to "skinking". The edition has the
following spellings:

[blocks in formation]

It was through this volume that Burns was retained to Scotland. He was on the point of embarking for Jamaica, when a letter from Dr. Blacklock to a friend induced the poet to visit Edinburgh. This edition, from the profits of which he received nearly £500, was the result of his visit to the Scottish capital. With the H. W. Poor bookplate. A very fine copy.

57 BURNS (ROBERT). Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. By Robert Burns. Frontispiece portrait by Beugo after Nasmyth.

Edinburgh: Printed for the Author, and sold by William Creech. M,DCC,Lxxxvii 8vo, black straight-grain morocco, gilt tooled, inside dentelle borders, gilt edges, by Stikeman.

THIRD EDITION (Second Edinburgh Edition). We believe this to be the Second Edinburgh Edition, with the misprint "stinking" corrected to "skinking". In all copies of the First and Second Edinburgh Editions which we have examined, the word "Roxburgh" in the list of Subscribers has been misspelled "Boxburgh", and the additional leaf of Subscribers' names has not been run in. This edition has the following spellings:

[blocks in formation]

58 BURNS (ROBERT). Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. By Robert Burns. In Two Volumes. A New Edition, Considerably Enlarged. Frontispiece portrait of Burns, by Beugo, after Alexander Nasmyth.
