Under the title of Claudius Ælian, on the orders of battle. I suspect the Dict. Univ. Hist. Crit. et Bibl. (t. i. p. 100.) of having confounded this edition with the following; for though they are dated differently, I think they are one and the same edition, but I never have been able to procure a sight of it. MANHEIM. 4to. 1796.

Tactici Graeci. Vollständige Sammlung aller Kriegsschriftsteller der Griechen, sowohl stratigischen als taktischen Inhalts; aus dem Griechischen übersetze, und mit Anmerkungen erläutert von A. H. Baumgärtner. Fine paper, 6s. 3d. This volume contains Onosander, and Ælian's treatise on the order of battle. They were not printed at the same time. Schoell, Répertoire, t. ii. p. 626.

It was not my intention to insert this author's treatise, but considering that some persons may disagree with me as to the correctness of assigning it to another Elian, I have therefore introduced it.

Fabricius, speaking of the 2nd edition, observes; " Equidem "MStis. Græcismi peritiam non ab re desiderarunt Kühnius et Perizonius." He speaks favourably of the last edition. B. G. t. iv. p. 699. 1685, says Dr. Harwood, is " a treasure of erudition and good criticism."

This edition, says Brunet, is often added to the Variorum collection, on account of the new notes which it contains. Manuel, t. i. p. 13.

AмST. 4to. 1731. Gr. et. Lat. Gronovii. 2 vols.

Fuhrmann calls this a very splendid and excellent edition of this entertaining collection of histories. Consult his Handbuch der Classichen Litteratur. "An admirable edition, embracing all the notes of preceding editors." Harwood. See Harles, Introd. L. G. t. ii. p. 252.; Bibliogr. Dict. v. i. p. 12 and 13.; and Brunet, t. i. p. 13. £1. 8s.

"Comme la traduction latine et les notes de Conr. Gesner, "J. Scheffer, Tan. Faber et Joach. Kühn, manquent dans cette réimpression de l'édition de Gronovius, les savans ne peuvent pas se passer de celle-ci. L'index Græcitatis, augmenté par "C. G. Kühn, est devenu excellent." that this edition was Harles, Introd. L. G.

Under the title of Πρόδρομος ἑλληνικῆς βιβλιοθήκης containing also Heraclides and Nicolaus Damascenus. This excellent edition of Coray, with critical and exegetical notes, written in ancient Greek, gives, most certainly, the best text of Ælian. Convinced of this, nothing remains to be wished for. Schoell, t. i. p. 2 and 3. Brunet informs us that Firman Didot sold a copy, on vellum, for £11. 13s. 6d. Manuel, t. i. p. 13.

De Animalibus.

GENEV. 12mo. 1611 et 1616. Gr. et Lat. Tornæsii.

A miserable edition. 2s. 6d.

AMST. 4to. 1744. Gr. et Lat. Gronovii.

Fuhrmann styles this a very splendid and correct edition. See his Handbuch. "An excellent edition." Harwood. This edition has two different cities assigned to it as the place of its publication; Mr. Dibdin gives it Amsterdam; Brunet, De Bure, and the Bibliographical Dict. London. Consult Harles, Introd. L. G. t. ii. p. 253. and Harles, Fabr. B. G. t. v. p. 620. Brunet, t. i. p. 12 and 13.; De Bure, No. 1683.; and Dibdin's Introduction, v. i. p. 125.

BASIL. Sm. 4to. 1750. Gr. et Lat.

A reprint of the preceding edition, which Brunet says is neither beautiful nor dear. Manuel, t. i. p. 13. 2 vols.

LIPS. 8vo. 1784. Gr. et Lat. Schneideri.

A very excellent edition, which may justly claim the title of editio optima. Schneider published a 4to. volume of corrections and annotations at Leipsic, 1789, which ought to accompany this edition. "Les notes de M. Schneider sont critiques, "et regardent aussi l'histoire naturelle. Cet ouvrage d'Elien "est moins connu, moins lu que les histoires diverses, et la

partie explicative n'est pas assez soignée dans les éditions. "Aussi le texte se rapprocheroit-il davantage de sa pureté "originaire; si M. Schneider avoit pu consulter le manuscrit "du Vatican, No. 997, conservé aujourd'hui à la Bibliothèque "impériale de Paris." Schoell, Répertoire, t. i. p. 3. 10s. 6d.
