IN thofe days: The word of the Lord came to the Prophet Jonas the fecond time, faying: Arife, and go to Ninive, the great city: and preach in it the preaching I bid thee. And Jonas arose,

and went to Ninive, according to the word of the Lord. Now Ninive was a large city, of three days journey d. And Jonas began to enter into the city one day's journey; and he cried out and faid: Yet forty days, and Ninive shall be deftroyed. And the people of Ninive believed in God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on fackcloth from the greateft even to the least. For the word came to the King of Ninive: and he arofe from his throne, and cafting off his robe, he put on fackcloth, and fat in afhes. And he ordered proclamation to be made and published in Ninive, by order of the King and his Nobles, faying: Let neither man nor beaft, oxen nor fheep, taste any thing: let them not feed nor drink water. And let men and beafts be covered with fackcloth, and cry out with all their might to the Lord: and let them turn every one from their evil way, and from the iniquity that is in their hands. Who knoweth but God may turn and pardon us, and lay afide the fury of his anger, fo that we may not perish? And God faw their works, that they had forfaken their evil ways: and our Lord God took compaffion on his people.

LESSON. Dan. xiv. 27.

N thofe days: The people of Babylon gathered together about the King, and faid to him: Deliver up to us Daniel, who hath destroyed Bel, and killed the Dragon; otherwise we will deftroy thee and thy family. The King therefore seeing, that they preffed with violence on him, being obliged by force, delivered Daniel up to them. And they caft him into the den of lions, where he was fix days. Now in the den there were feven lions, and they every day gave them two carcaffes and two sheep, which were not given them then, that they might devour Daniel. And there was in Judea a prophet called Habacuc, who had made broth, and, having broken bread in a difh, was going into the field to carry it to the reapers. And the angel of the Lord faid to Habacuc: Carry the dinner thou haft provided to Daniel in Babylon, who is in the lions den. And Habacuc faid: Lord, I never faw Babylon, neither know I the den. Then the angel of the Lord took him by the crown of his head, and carrying him by the hair, with the force of his fpirit placed him in Babylon over the den. And Habacuc cried out aloud, faying: O Daniel, fervant of God, take the dinner God hath fent thee. And Daniel said : Thou haft remembered me, O God, and haft not Or, In a mighty wind.

Then the King came on the feventh day to bewail Daniel; and coming to the den, he looked in, and behold, Daniel was fitting in the midft of the lions. And the King cried out with a loud voice, faying: Great art thou, O Lord the God of Daniel. And he took him out of the den of lions. But those, who had been the cause of his intended deftruction, be caft into the den, and they were devoured in a moment before his face. Then the King faid: Let all the people of the whole earth fear the God of Daniel, for it is he who faveth, performeth figns and wonders, and hath delivered Daniel from the lions den.

GRADUAL. P. 42. Judge my caufe, O Lord; and deliver me from the wicked and deceitful man. V. Send forth thy light and thy truth; for they have led me on and brought me up to thy holy mount. GOSPEL. John vii. 1, 13.

T that time: Jefus went into Galilee; for he would not go into Judea, because the Jews fought to kill him. Now the Jewish feast of the tabernacles was at hand; and his brethren faid to him: Depart hence, and go to Judea, that thy difciples alfo may fee the works thou performeft. For no one doth any thing in fecret, when he hath a mind to be known in publick: if therefore thou performest these things, fhew thy felf to the world. For neither did his brethren believe in him. Jefus therefore faith to them: My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready. The world cannot hate you; but it hateth me, because I bear witness against it, that it's works are evil. Go you up to this feftival; but I am not now going to this feftival; for my time is not yet fully come. Having faid this, he ftaid in Galilee. But when his brethren VOL. II.
