eat this Paffover with you before I fuffer. For I declare to you, I will not any more eat thereof, till it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. C. And taking the cup, he gave thanks and faid: + Take, and divide this among you. For I declare to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, till the kingdom of God cometh. C. And having taken bread, he gave thanks, and broke it, and gave it to them, faying: This is my body, which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me. C. He took likewife the cup, after he had fupped, faying: This cup is the New Teftament in my blood, which shall be shed for you. But behold the hand of him, who betrayeth me, is with me on the table. And the Son of Man goeth indeed, as it is decreed but wo to that man, by whom he shall be betrayed. C. And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was, that should do this thing. And there arofe also a dispute among them, which of them feemed to be the greatest. And he said to them: t The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them: and they that have power over them are called benefactors. But it is not to be fo with you: but he that is the greatest among you, let him become like the leaft; and he that is the chief, as he that waiteth. For which is the greateft, he that is at table, or he that waiteth? Is it not he that is at table? But I am among you, as one that waiteth: and you are they, who have continued with me in my trials. And I prepare for you a kingdom, as my Father hath prepared it for me, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and fit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Ifrael. C. And the Lord faid: + Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath fought you, to fift you like wheat: but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and do thou, when thou art once converted, ftrengthen thy brethren. C. And he faid to him: S. Lord, I am ready to go

with thee both to prison, and to death. C. But he faid: I tell thee, Peter: The cock fhall not crow this day, till thou thrice deny that thou knoweft me. C. And he said to them: † When I fent you without purse, and fcrip, and fhoes, did you want any thing? C. They faid: S. Nothing. C. Then he faid to them: † But now he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewife his fcrip: and he that hath no fword, let him fell his coat, and buy one. For I fay to you, that which is written, muft alfo be fulfilled in me: And he was numbered with the wicked. For the things that relate to me, are accomplished. C. And they faid: S. Lord, behold here are two fwords. C. And he faid to them: +"Tis enough." C. And going out, he went, acccording to his cuftom to the mount of Olives. And his difciples followed him. And when he was come to the place, he faid to them: † Pray, that you fall not into temptation. C. And he withdrew from them about a ftone's caft, and, kneeling down down, he prayed, faying: Father, if it be thy pleasure, put away this cup from me: but not my will, but thine be done. C. And an angel from heaven appeared to him, ftrengthning him. And being in an agony, he prayed the more. And his fweat was as drops of blood trickling down upon the ground. And when he arose from prayer, and came to his difciples, he found them fleeping through sadness. And he faid to them: † Why do you sleep? Rife and pray, that you fall not into temptation. C. And as he was faying this, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, headed them, and drew near to Jefus to kiss him. But Jefus faid to him: Judas, is it with a kifs thou betrayeft the Son of Man? C. And they that were with him, feeing what was to happen, faid to him: S. Lord, what if we ftrike with the fword? C. And one of them ftruck the fervant of the high priest, VOL. II, R

and cut off his right ear. But Jefus anfwering, faid: Hold, ftop there. C. And having touched his ear, he healed him. And Jefus faid to those that came to him, the chief priests, and magiftrates of the temple, and elders: + Are you come with fwords and clubs as against a robber? When I was every day with you in the temple, you never laid hands on me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. C. Then they feizing him, led him to the house of the high priest: and Peter followed at a distance. And a fire being kindled in the middle of the court, they fat about it, and Peter was with them. And a maid-fervant seeing him fitting at the fire, and having viewed him, faid S. This man was alfo with him. C. And he denied him, faying: S. Woman, I know him not. C. And a little after, a man alfo feeing him, faid: S. Thou too art one of them. C. But Peter faid: S. O man, I am not. C. And after the space of about an hour, another affirmed it, faying: S. Certainly this man was also with him: for he is a Galilean. C. And Peter faid: S. Man, I know not what thou fayeft. C. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, the cock crowed. And the Lord, turning about, looked at Peter. And Peter remembered what the Lord had faid: Before the cock croweth, thou fhalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly. And the men that held Jefus, infulted him, beating him. And they alfo hoodwinked him, and struck him on the face; and they asked him, faying: S. Prophefy who it was that ftruck thee? C. And many other things they blafphemously spoke against him. And when it was day, the elders of the people, and the chief priests and the Scribes met together, and brought him to their council-hall, faying: S. If thou art the Christ, tell us. C. And he faid to them: + If I tell you, you will not believe me. And if I afk you any questions, you will not answer me, nor let me

go. But hereafter the Son of Man shall fit on the right hand of the power of God. C. Then they all faid S. Art thou then the Son of God? C. And he faid: + You have faid it; for I am. C. And they faid: S. What farther need have we of witneffes? For we have heard enough from his own mouth. And they all rifing up, led him to Pilate. And they began to accufe him, faying: S. We have found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding tribute to be paid to Cæfar, and affirming himfelf to be the Chrift, and our King. C. And Pilate afked him, faying: S. Art thou the King of the Jews? C. And he anfwering, faid: + Thou fayest it. C. Then Pilate faid to the chief priests, and people: S. I find nothing criminal in this man. C.. But they perfifted the more, faying: S. He ftirreth up the people, teaching all over Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.. And Pilate hearing Galilee, afked if he was a Galilean. And as foon: as he knew that he belonged to Herod's jurifdiction, he fent him to Herod, who at that time was in Jerufalem. And when Herod faw Jefus, he was very glad; for he had been a long time defirous to fee him, because he had heard many things of him, and hoped to fee fome miracle done by him. And he afked him many questions; but he made him no anfwer. And the chief priests and Scribes ftood by, conftantly accufing him. And Herod with his army treated him with fcorn, and infulted him, clothing him with a white garment, and sent him back. to Pilate. And Herod and Pilate were reconciled to one another that day; for before they were at variance. And Pilate calling together the chief priefts, and magiftrates, and the people, faid to them: S. You have brought this man before me, as one that perverteth the people; and behold, having examined him before you, I find him not guilty of any of all those things you accufe him of. No, nor

Herod neither for I fent you to him, and behold nothing is done to him, as if he deferved death. I will chaftife him therefore, and difmifs him. C. Now on the festival he was obliged to release them one man. But the whole multitude cried out all together, faying: S. Away with this man, and release Barabbas; C. Who had been put in prifon for a fedition raised in the city, and for a murder. And Pilate fpoke to them again, being defirous to releafe Jefus. But they cried out, faying: S. Crucify him, crucify him. C. And he faid to them a third time: S. What harm hath this man done? I find nothing in him, for which he deferveth death: I will therefore chastise him, and then release him. C. But they perfifted demanding with a loud voice that he might be crucified. And their cries increased. And Pilate gave fentence that their demand should be complied with. And he released to them him for whom they had petitioned, and who had been put in prifon for murder and fedition; but Jefus he delivered up to their will. And as they led him along, they laid hold of one Simon a Cyrenean, coming out of the country, and laid the cross on him to carry after Jefus. And there followed him a great multitude of the people, and of women, who lamented and bewailed him. But Jefus turning to them, faid: ↑ Daughters of Jerufalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourfelves, and for your children; because, behold the days will come, in which they will fay: Bleffed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the breasts that gave not fuck. Then they fhall begin to fay to the mountains: Fall upon us and to the hills: Cover us: For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry? C.
