GOSPEL. Matt. iv. I, II.

T that time: Jefus was led by the fpirit into the defert, to be tempted by the Devil. And when he had fafted forty days and forty nights he was afterwards hungry. And the tempter coming, faid to him: If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered, and faid, It is written: Not by bread alone doth man live, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the Devil took him up into the holy city, and fet him on a pinnacle of the temple, and faid to him: If thou be the Son of God caft thyfelf down, for it is written: He hath given his Angels charge over thee, and in their hands fhall they bear thee up, left perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jefus faid to him: It is again written: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again the Devil took him up into a very high mountain, and fhewed him all the kingdoms of the world, and all the glory of them, and laid to him: All these will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and adore me. Then Jefus faith to him: Begone Satan; for it is written: The Lord thy God shalt thou adore, and him only shalt thou ferve. Then the Devil left him, and behold Angels came, and miniftred to him.
