The BLESSING of the WATER.

INSTRUCTION.

HE ufe of water among mankind, whenever

Tthey had a mind to expiate their faults, to

renew their folemn engagements, or to enter upon exercises of piety and religion, is one of those univerfal practices every where found, where there are any footsteps of an outward worship remaining. It was no invention of the heathen nations, but a practice that came to them by primitive tradition from our first father Adam after his fall, as an acknowledgment of being defiled with fin, and expreffive of that purity with which we ought to approach God. It was continued by Mofes among other primitive practices preparatory to facrifice; and is ftill found at the entrance of our Churches; and the fprinkling therewith is the beginning of our facrifice on the folemn appointed day of reft. Salt is mixt with the water to keep it fweet, and the one and the other are folemnly confecrated, that is to say, are withdrawn from all profane ufes, to be applied only to thofe of religion. The Church attributes no fupernatural effect to this fanctified water, but what it may please God to grant to it, in order to fhew the force of the prayers of his Church, or to recompenfe the faith of such as use it with the respect due to what hath been confecrated and fet apart for the ufes of religion. The faithful therefore are to receive this fprinkling of water with great humility, and a forrow for their fins, reciting the 50th Pfalm in whole or in part: And afterwards to take fome of the water home with them to use with faith and piety, according to the intention of the Church, at getting up, and going to bed; in ftorms of thunder VOL. The EXORCISM of the SALT. Exorcife thee, O creature of falt, by the living God, by the true God, by the holy God; by that God, who, by the prophet Elizeus, commanded thee to be caft into the water to cure the barrenness thereof; that thou may'ft, by this exorcifm, become beneficial to the faithful, and healthful to body and foul to all, who make use of thee; and that in what place foever thou fhalt be fprinkled, all the illufions, and wickedness, and crafty wiles of Satan may be chafed away, and depart from that place; as alfo every unclean fpirit, commanded in his name, who is to come to judge the living and the dead, and the world by fire. R. Amen.

Almighty and everlafting God, we most humbly implore thy infinite mercy to vouchsafe to blefs and fanctify this thy creature of falt, which thou madeft for the ufe of mankind, that it may be to all, who take it, health both of body and foul: And that whatfoever fhall be touched, or fprinkled therewith, may be freed from all uncleannefs, and all affaults of wicked fpirits. Thro' our Lord Jefus Chrift thy fon, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghoft, God world without end. R. Amen.

The EXORCISM of the WATER. Exorcife thee, O creature of water, in the name of God the Father almighty; and in the name of

a Expl. By exorcifm is meant a form of adjuration, or a religious ceremony, by which evil and malignant spirits are driven away,

Jefus Chrift his fon, our Lord; and by the power of the Holy Ghoft; that thou may'ft by this exorcifm receive efficacy to chafe away all the power of the enemy, and be enabled to caft him out, and put him to flight together with his Apoftate Angels, by the power of the fame Jefus Christ our Lord, who is to come to judge the living and the dead, and the world by fire. R. Amen.

Let us pray. Deus qui ad falutem.

God, who, for the benefit of mankind, makeft

ufe of the element of water in the greatest facraments, mercifully hear our prayers, and impart the virtue of thy bleffing to this element prepared by various purifications: That, this thy creature, made ufe of in thy myfteries, may receive the effects of thy divine favour for the chafing away Devils, and curing difeafes: And that whatfoever fhall be fprinkled with this water in the houfes or places of the faithful, may be freed from all uncleannefs, and delivered from hurt: Let no peftilential fpirit refide there, nor any infectious air: Let all the fnares of our fecret enemies be removed: And may whatever is contrary to the fafety and repofe of the inhabitants of that place, be put to flight by the fprinkling of this water: That the welfare we feek by calling on thy name, may be fecured from all affaults. May this falt and water be mixed together in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghoft. R. Amen.
