Few copies of this book, tho not originally intended to be publifhed, were printed off in the year 1722. but, it being transcribed for the prefs haftily, and corrected under great disadvantages, many errata and mistakes got into it, which could not all be prefently obferved. With a great part of them

therefore ftill remaining four or five of the copies were afterwards given away; and fome more, taken from the printing-houfe, paffed through hands unknown to the author, and he fuppofes were fold privately. There has, befide, been Some talk of a piratical defign upon it: and if that should take effect, both it and he might fuffer extremely. For thefe reafons he has thought fit to reprint it himself, more correctly, with some small alterations (in things not efSential to the main defign) and fome additions. Tho he cannot but be apprehenfive, that ftill there may be many things, which have efcaped his eye, or his attention.

• Some more of the fame kind were made by the author a few days before his death, which are inferted in this impreflion.

WAS much furprifed, SIR, when (fome time ago) you fo importunately defired my thoughts upon these questions,

I. Is there really any fuch thing as natural religion, property and truly fo called?

II. If there is, what is it?
