tecting cl. wrappers, hf. mor. slip-case (452), Jan. 10, Anderson Galleries Rosenbach, $1,260

{These two broadsides, unrecorded so far as we are able to ascertain, are in all probability the only copies which have survived. Thomas, in his History of Printing," states: "The first press was set up in this city (Annapolis) in 1726. . . . The earliest book I have met with, printed in this colony, is A Complete Collection of the Laws of Maryland. Imprint: Annapolis, Printed by William Parks, 1727.'" The earliest mention of Annapolis printing in Evans is a volume of "Acts of Assembly," printed by William Parks (1726).]

[This little tract of 18 pages is of extreme rarity, of which apparently no copy has occurred in many years. Not in Hoe, Huth, Church, nor any of the recently dispersed collections of Americana. [A, 2 11., title on A2; B-L in fours. The leaf marked A3, which should follow the title, comes after B4 in this copy, and there is no A4; three other copies of this rare volume examined for the purpose of verification also show 2 ll. lacking in sig. A. The modern reprint also corresponds as regards the text. The several narratives of which the book consists were, as R. G. states in his introductory epistle to Mr. I. P., "writ by the seuerall Actors themselves, after their plaine and rude manner." The MS. seems to have been sent over to England by the same R. G., and to have been printed through the instrumentality of G. Morton. Pp. 60-4 are occupied by a letter from E[dward] Winslow] to a friend in America, in recommendation of New Plymouth. It was no doubt this work which suggested to Longfellow at least the name of his hero, "Miles Standish, the Puritan captain." It is exceedingly rare.]
