Curmer, 1864, 4to. (446), July 18, Sotheby Howell, £6 10s. Evangelistarion. [Greek, late xith century.] Manuscript on vell., 105 11. (255 mm. by 184 mm.), double columns of 28 lines, written in a fine Greek minuscule book-hand, initials and headings in red, contemp. binding of canvas

over thick wooden boards, on one side a finely-executed
painting of the Crucifixion on gesso, the feet of Our Lord
rest upon a suppedaneum, His head, which is surrounded
by a cruciferous nimbus, is inclined over the right side
and the arms are only slightly bent, the eyes are closed,
the face is bearded and a loin cloth reaches from the
waist to the knee, the right side is pierced and the feet
are held by a single nail, below the cross is the skull of
Adam, the Virgin and St. John stand on either side, the
upper part of the cross stands out against a background
of gold (the head of St. John and the feet of the Virgin
are missing, the paint being chipped off, but the central
figure is practically uninjured, the ornamentation on the
other cover and the back of the binding has entirely
disappeared), late XI. cent., 4to. (400), July 25, Sotheby
Meredith, £165
[Examples of early Byzantine bindings are of excessive
rarity. The manuscript was probably written by
of Egyptian or Arabic origin, as the scribe found difficulty
in transcribing the Greek letter 3 (beta), in many cases
using μ (mu). The name of Leontius appears on the
paper pasted inside the binding, who is probably identical
with the monk of Cyprus who made several additions to
Codex Regius, No. 318, a manuscript of the xith century.
The manuscript came from the Convent of Queen Cathe-
rine on Mount Olympus in Cyprus.]

[Very rare. Unknown to Sabin, and apparently no copy has been previously offered.
