THE CHRISTIAN,

IN HIS CONVERSION, CONFLICT, GRACES, AND TRIUMPH.

999

The Christian Change.

LET worldly minds the world pursue,

It has no charms for me;
Once I admir'd its trifles too,
But grace has set me free.

Its pleasures now no longer please,
No more content aford;

Far from my heart be joys like these
Now I have seen the Lord.

As by the light of op aing day
The stars are all conceal 'd,
So earthly pleasures fade away,
When Jesus is reveal d.

Creatures no more divide my choice,
I god them all depart;

His asure, and ove, and gracious voice,
have and my rewing heart.

Now, Lord, I would be thine alone,
And wheny dve to thee:
Bic was I hope that thou wilt own
A worthes worm Jie me?

to`q sutters I'm the worst, Jouer det sny will;

For if thou hadst not lov'd me first,
I had refus'd thee still.

Thy promise, Lord, is all my plea,
With this I venture nigh;

Thou callest burden'd souls to thee,
And such indeed am I.

Bow'd down beneath a load of sin,
By Satan sorely prest,

By war without, and fears within,
I come to thee for rest.

Be thou my shield and hiding-place;
That, shelter'd near thy side,
I may my fierce accuser face,
And tell him Thou hast dy'd.'

O wond'rous love! to bleed and die,
To bear the cross and shame,
That guilty sinners, such as I,
Might plead thy gracious name.

'Poor tempest-tossed soul, be still,
My promis'd grace receive;'
'Tis Jesus speaks I must, I will,
I can, I do, believe.

231. The Christian Charge.

A CHARGE to keep I have,
4 God to glorify;
r-dying soul to save,
And it for the sky.

To serve the

sent age,

My calling to

fil;

O may it all my powrs engage,
To do my Master's wal!

Arm me with jealous care,
As in thy sight to live;
And O! thy servant, Lord, prepare.
A good account to give!

Help me to watch and pray,
And on thyself rely;

And let me ne'er my trust betray,
Lest I for ever die.

A DEBTOR to mercy alone,
Of covenant mercy I sing;
Nor fear, with thy righteousness on,
My person and off'rings to bring:
The terrors of law and of God,
With me can have nothing to do;
My Saviour's obedience and blood
Hide all my transgressions from view.
The work which his goodness began,

The arm of his strength will complete;

His promise is Yea and Amen,
And never was forfeited yet:

Things future, nor things that are now,..
Not all things below nor above,
Can make him his purpose forego,'

Or sever my soul from his love.

My name from the palms of his hands
Eternity will not erase ;

Imprest on his heart it remains.
In marks of indelible grace: ̧
Yes, I to the end shall endure,
As sure as the earnest is giv'n;
More happy, but not more secure,'
The glorify'd spirits in heav'n.

233.

Confidence in God.

AWAY, my unbelieving fear,

Fear shall in me no more take place!
My Saviour doth not yet appear,

He hides the brightness of his face:
But shall I therefore let him go,
And basely to the tempter yield?
No in the strength of Jesus, no→→
I never will give up my shield.
Altho' the vine its fruit deny,
Altho' the olive yield no oil,
The withering fig-tree droop and die,
The field elude the tiller's toil,
The empty stall no herd afford,
And perish all the bleating race,

Yet will I triumph in the Lord,
The God of my salvation praise.
Barren altho' my soul remain,
And no one bud of grace appear,
No fruit of all my toil and pain,
But sin, and only sin is here:
Altho' my gifts and comforts lost,
My blooming hopes cut off I see,
Yet will I in my Saviour trust,
And glory that he dy'd for me.
In hope, believing against hope,
Jesus, my Lord and God, I claim,
Jesus, my strength, shall lift me up,
Salvation is in Jesu's name:
To me he soon shall bring it nigh,
My soul shall then outstrip the wind,
On wings of love mount up on high,
And leave the world and sin behind.

AMAZING grace! (how sweet the sound!)
That sav'd a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears reliev'd;

How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ'd.

Thro' many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
