Whate'er thy sacred will ordains,
O give me strength to bear;
O let me know my Father reigns,
And trust thy tender care.

If pain and sickness rend this frame,
And life almost depart,
Is not thy mercy still the same,
To cheer my drooping heart?

If cares and sorrow me surround,
Their pow'r why should I fear?
My inward peace they cannot wound,
If thou, my God, art near.

Thy sov'reign ways are all unknown
To my weak erring sight;
Yet let my soul, adoring, own
That all thy ways are right.

My God, my Father, be thy name
My solace and my stay!
O deign to seal my humble claim,
And drive my fears away.

26. Praise to the Creator.

BEFORE Jehovah's awful throne, I Ye nations bow with sacred joy ; 90 Know that the Lord is God alone, He can create, and he destroy.

C

His sov'reign power, without our aid,
Made us of clay, and form'd us men:
And when like wand'ring sheep we stray'd,
He brought us to his fold again.

We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs,
High as the heavens our voices raise;
And earth with her ten thousand tongues,
Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.

Wide as the world is thy command,
Vast as eternity thy love;

Firm as a rock thy truth must stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move.

27. Prayer to the Trinity.

COME, thou Almighty King,
Help us thy name to sing,
Help us to praise.

Father all-glorious,

O'er all victorious,

Come, and reign over us,
Ancient of Days.

Jesus, our Lord, arise,

Scatter our enemies,

And make them fall.

Let thine Almighty aid
Our sure defence be made,
Our souls on thee be stay'd:
Lord, hear our call!.

Come, Holy Comforter,
Thy sacred witness bear

In this glad hour.

Thou, who Almighty art,
Now rule in ev'ry heart,
And ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of pow'r!

To the great One in Three
Eternal praises be,
Hence-evermore.

His sov'reign Majesty
May we in glory see,
And to eternity

28.

Love and adore.

Address to the Trinity.

FATHER, Son, and Holy Ghost,
One in Three, and Three in One!
As by the celestial host,

Let thy will on earth be done!
Praise by all to thee be giv'n,

Glorious Lord of earth and heav'n!

If so poor a worm as I

May to thy great glory live,

All mine actions sanctify,

All my thoughts and words receive!
Claim me for thy service, claim
All I have, and all I am!

Take my soul and body's pow'rs,
Take my mem'ry, mind and will,
All my goods and all my hours,
All I know, and all I feel,
All I think, and speak, and do:
Take my heart-but make it new!

Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

One in Three, and Three in One, As by the celestial host,

Let thy will on earth be done! Praise by all to thee be giv'n,

Glorious Lord of earth and heav'n!

29. Prayer to God for Rest.

DEAR Friend of friendless sinners, hear,
And magnify thy grace divine!
Pardon a worm that would draw near,
That would his heart to thee resign:
A worm by self and sin opprest,
That pants to reach thy promis'd rest.

With holy fear, and reverend love
I long to lie beneath thy throne;
I long in thee to live, and move,
And stay myself on thee alone:
Teach me to lean upon thy breast,
To find in thee thy promis'd rest.

Thou say'st thou wilt thy servants keep In perfect peace, whose minds shall be Like new-born babes, or helpless sheep,

Completely stay'd, dear Lord, on thee: How calm their state, how truly blest, Who trust on thee, the promis'd rest!

Take me, my Saviour, as thine own,
And vindicate my righteous cause;
Be thou my portion, Lord, alone,
And bend me to obey thy laws:
In thy dear arnis of love caress'd,
Give me to find thy promis'd rest.

Bid the tempestuous rage of sin
With all its wrathful fury die;
Let the Redeemer dwell within,

And turn my sorrows into joy:
O may my heart, by thee possess'd,
Know thee to be my promis'd rest.

30. Praise to the Creator.

I'LL praise my Maker while I've breath, And when my voice is lost in death,

Praise shall employ my nobler pow'rs; My days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last, Or immortality endures.
