Thus, at the door, shall mercy stand
In all her winning forms?

Surprising grace!-and shall my heart
Unmov'd and cold remain ?
Has this hard rock no tender part?
Must mercy plead in vain ?

Shall Jesus for admission sue,

His charming voice unheard?
And this vile heart, his rightful due,
Remain for ever: barr'd?

'Tis sin, alas! with tyrant pow'r
The lodging has possest,
And clouds of traitors bar the door
Against the heav'nly guest.

Lord, rise in thy all-conqu'ring grace,
Thy mighty pow'r display;
One beam of glory from thy face
Can drive my foes away.

Ye dang'rous inmates, hence depart,
Dear Saviour, enter in;

And guard the passage to my heart,
And keep out ev'ry sin.

[blocks in formation]

Ho! ev'ry one that thirsts draw nigh (Tis God invites the fallen race,)

Mercy and free salvation buy;

Buy wine and milk, and gospel grace.

Come to the living waters, come,

Sinners obey your Maker's voice.

[ocr errors]

Return, ye weary wanderers, home,
And in redeeming love rejoice.
See, from the rock, a fountain rise!
For you in healing streams it rolls;
Money ye need not bring, nor price,
Ye lab'ring, burthen'd, sin-sick souls.
Nothing ye in exchange shall give;
Leave all you have, and are, behind:
Frankly the gift of God receive;
Pardon and peace in Jesus find.

[blocks in formation]

COME, my Father's family,

Ye ransom'd of the Lord;
Come, ye sinners, who with me
Are ev'ry where abhorr'd;
Let us gladly trace his steps,

Who suffer'd death among the Jews, Who the friendless soul accepts,

Whom all beside refuse.

Jesus, the despis'd and mean,
Our master let us own,

He the sacrifice for sin,

The Saviour" he alone:

Let us take and bear his cross,
Despis'd disciples let us be;
Mock'd and slighted, as he was
For you, my friends, and me.

None but Jesus will we sing,
None else will we adore;

He our Prophet, Priest, and King,
Shall be for evermore:

None among the heav'nly pow'rs,

Nor one on earth our praise may claim, None but Jesus call we ours, None but the bleeding Lamb.

314. Invitation.

COME, ye wretched souls, to Jesus,
Weak and wounded, sick and poor;
Jesus ready stands to save us,

Full of pity, love, and pow'r.
He is able, &c.

He is willing; doubt no more.

Ho! ye needy, come and welcome;
God's free bounty glorify:
True belief and true repentance,
Every grace that brings us nigh;
Without money, &c.

Come to Jesus Christ, and buy.

Let not conscience make you linger;
Nor of fitness fondly dream:
All the fitness he requireth,

Is, to feel your need of him :
This he gives you, &c.

'Tis the Spirit's rising beam.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Bruis'd and mangled by the fall;

If you tarry till you're better,

You will never come at all: Not the righteous, &c.

Sinners Jesus came to call.

Agonizing in the garden,

Lo! your Maker prostrate lies; On the bloody tree behold him: Hear him cry, before he dies, It is finish'd,' &c.

Sinners, will not this suffice?

Lo! th' incarnate God ascended,
Pleads the merit of his blood:
Venture on him, venture wholly ;
Let no other trust intrude :
None but Jesus, &c.

Can do helpless sinners good.

Saints and angels, join'd in concert, Sing the praises of the Lamb; While the blissful seats of heaven Sweetly echo with his name: Hallelujah, &c.

Sinners here may sing the same.

[blocks in formation]

LET ev'ry mortal ear attend,
And ev'ry heart rejoice;
The trumpet of the gospel sounds
With an inviting voice.

Ho! all ye hungry starving souls,
That feed upon the wind,

And vainly strive with earthly toys.
To fill an empty mind;
Eternal Wisdom has prepar'd
A soul-reviving feast,

And bids your longing appetites
The rich provision taste.

Ho! ye that pant for living streams,
And pine away and die,

Here you may quench your raging thirst
With springs that never dry.

Rivers of love and mercy here
In a rich ocean join;
Salvation in abundance flows,

Like floeds of milk and wine.

Dear God! the treasure of thy love
Are everlasting mines,

Deep as our helpless mis'ries are,
And boundless as our sins.

The happy gates of gospel grace
Stand open night and day:
Lord, we are come to seek supplies,
And drive our wants away.

[blocks in formation]

SINNERS, obey the gospel-word,
Haste to the supper of your Lord,
Be wise to know your gracious day,
All things are ready, come away!
Ready the Father is to own,
And kiss his late returning Son;
