THE publication of the Epistle to the Romans in The Cambridge Bible for Schools seems a suitable opportunity for me to say a few words on the nature of the Editorial supervision which I have thought it right to exercise in the preparation of the several volumes of the Series. I do not hold myself responsible either for the interpretation of particular passages which the Editors of the several Books have adopted, or for any opinion on points of doctrine that they may have expressed. In the Epistles, and especially in such an Epistle as that to the Romans, questions arise of the deepest theological import, on which the ablest and most conscientious interpreters have differed and always will differ. My aim has been in all such cases to leave each Contributor to the unfettered exercise of his own judgment, only taking |
