[ANGLOFRENCH, XIVTH CENTURY.] RICHLY ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM (250 ll. 7월 by 51⁄2 in.), finely written in bold gothic letters, long lines, 14 to a full page, red rubrics in Latin and French; full Calendar in French in gold, blue and red; every page surrounded by borders of illuminated spiked ivy-leaves interspersed with figures of angels playing musical instruments, grotesques issuing from flowers, etc.; small diptych miniatures of the Occupations of the Months and the Signs of the Zodiac in the lower margins of the Calendar; many hundred fine illuminated initials with inner decorative borders and textual ornaments, 29 small initial miniatures of Evangelists, Saints, etc.; 11 LARGE, FINELY PAINTED AND RICHLY ILLUMINATED MINIATURES, some arched, some square, WITHIN REMARKABLE DEEP AND ELABORATE DECORATIVE BORDERS OF FLOWERS, FOLIAGE, BIRDS, SEMI-HUMANS, GROTESQUES, ANGELS WITH MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, etc. old French boarded red velvet (17th Cent.) sm. 4to. SÆC. XIV THIS MS. IS A FINE SPECIMEN OF FRENCH DECORATIVE ART OF THE LATE XIVTH CENTURY, WITH EVIDENT ENGLISH INFLUENCE. The borders are very interesting for the figures of angels, scholars reading books, mummers, etc. These figures number 444. The angels are chiefly clothed in white blouses drawn in outline, and the musical instruments upon which they are playing represent

probably all those known at the time the MS. was decorated, in reed, brass and string. Bagpipes, horns, bassoons, trumpets, violins, flutes, harp, drums and bells are employed. The grotesque figures are chiefly drawn in red and blue, some with red republican caps, and most have the lower parts of their bodies hidden in flowercups. The birds represented in the borders include peacocks and owls, and birds of gorgeous plumage. The subjects depicted in the large miniatures are the following: 1, The Annunciation ; 2, The Visitation, the Deity in heaven blessing; 3, The Nativity; 4, The Shepherds (diapered background, the angel above); 5, Flight into Egypt; 6, Death of the Virgin; 7, The Crucifixion (Christ alone, with Mary and John, the Deity above blessing); 8, Pentecost; 9, Vigil of the Dead (an interior); 10, The Trinity (a chequered background); 11, Madonna and Infant Jesus, an angel offering lilies from a vase, diapered background. It has an illuminated title in front, written in the 17th century: Office de l'Eglise et autres Prières 14 Siècle."
